AZ Sheriff Overseeing the Guthrie Abduction Case | Political News

Most Americans before Feb. 1 had little to no awareness of the particulars of Pima County, Arizona, which is in half of the state bordering our neighbor, Mexico. The second largest metropolis in AZ, Tucson, is situated in Pima County, though, and during the first days of February, the entire nation grew to become intimately acquainted with the story of one resident in explicit. You know who I imply: Nancy Guthrie. And in current days, the story has taken a political flip unrelated to the alleged abduction case.

If you’ve got one way or the other missed the greatest human curiosity/true crime story of 2026, RedState’s Sister Toldjah has filed a plethora of tales over the past month-plus on Guthrie, the 84-year-old mom and grandmother, including this early missive on Feb. 2 (discover more of our coverage right here):

When Mrs. Guthrie, who is NBC News “Today Show” co-host Savannah Guthrie’s mom, didn’t show up for Sunday church, a lacking individuals report was filed, reportedly by a involved member of the family.

Toldjah also shared some data from a press convention held by Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, including the disturbing element that Guthrie left her home against her will:

“She did not leave on her own. We know that,” he famous.

Toldjah continued:

Later in the day, however, Nanos revealed an even more chilling element, saying that he believed that Mrs. Guthrie was kidnapped while she was asleep in her mattress:

The disappearance could be very disturbing to the neighborhood, Nanos told MS NOW — previously identified as MSNBC — on Monday, saying investigators imagine she was eliminated from her home against her will.

“You have an 84 year old lady who is home in bed, asleep in the middle of night (and) disappears,” Nanos said. “That’s not Tucson and that’s not who we are here.”

The Pima County Sheriff was later called out for a stunt he reportedly pulled by refusing to permit the feds to deal with the processing of essential evidence, collected at the scene, at their famend Quanitico services, as we wrote.

RedState also reported about the joint efforts of federal and local investigators main to the search of a Tucson home, and a vehicle being taken away by police. Authroties detained at least 4 people while the home was searched by a SWAT staff. As my colleague Bonchie wrote:

NewsNation’s Brian Entin was on the scene when a combination of local and federal authorities arrived. He was finally told to exit the perimeter, but reported that none of the law enforcement had left at that level.

At a separate location, as Bonchie added, “the vehicle was then loaded onto a flatbed truck and taken into custody, presumably to be forensically investigated.”

As we revealed in an update on the story, no one was arrested by PCSD on Saturday, Feb. 13. That’s where we left issues on Feb.14.

This past weekend marks the seventh week since a lacking particular person’s report was filed for Nancy Guthrie.

There have also been pointed questions about Sheriff Nanos’ time while working at the El Paso Police Department, and some factual weirdness in entries on his official resume.

But as I discussed, issues have just taken a flip… and they could be for the worse, politically talking, for Sheriff Nanos, in the type of a recall effort.

Local TV station KOLD in Tucson has confirmed stories of the recall with the Pima County Elections Department, according to the station’s night news anchor Mary Coleman, who shared the affirmation in an X post on Tuesday night time

It read:

SHERIFF RECALL EFFORT: We’ve confirmed with the Pima County Elections Department that a recall effort has been launched for Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos. It was filed on March twelfth.

To transfer ahead, 120,000 signatures have to be collected in the next 120 days to immediate the precise recall.

This comes in the wake of scrutiny over the handling of the Nancy Guthrie investigation.

Sheriff Nanos, according to KOLD, commented on the report about the recall effort:

We’re conscious of the recall and it is the proper of the people. We’ll always honor the will of the people and that’s what makes democracy.” [sic]

You read that proper. Democracy is on the line, of us. Which occasion do you reckon Nanos roots for?

This is a developing story. RedState will present updates as warranted.
