BBC Breakfast issued a devastating announcement just minutes into Saturday’s show (March 21). Naga Munchetty announced that tributes have flooded in for Dame Jenni Murray, following her death aged 75. “Dame Jenni hosted Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour for more than 30 years until she stepped down in 2020,” Naga told viewers. Looking back at the broadcaster’s life, Tim Muffet described Jenni as “an incisive, fearless interviewer”.
He continued in his report: “Dame Jenni Murray formed a strong bond with listeners and was never scared of asking the questions others might avoid.” He recalled how she interviewed former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on Woman’s Hour in 1993, at a time when she was one of the few ladies in an overwhelmingly male cupboard. “Did you set out to make these men who were beginning to disagree with you, afraid?” Dame Jenni requested. “Did you try to frighten them?”

“How absolutely absurd,” the late politician responded. “I thrived on argument.”
“Dame Jenni’s broadcasting career began in the 1970s. She would go on to present Radio 4’s Today programme and BBC Two’s Newsnight. But it was Woman’s Hour for which Dame Jenni Murray will be best remembered.
“She started presenting the programme in 1987 and would do so for the next 33 years. Her encounters captivated listeners.”
This included her interviews with an extraordinary range of influential women, from Hollywood legend Bette Davis to Hillary Clinton and author Margaret Atwood. In 2006, the presenter announced her breast cancer diagnosis to listeners, explaining that she would be undergoing treatment.
Tim continued: “The late Queen Elizabeth paid a go to to the Woman’s Hour studio. Dame Jenni obtained her Damehood in 2011 for providers to broadcasting.
“In 2020, after 33 years, Dame Jenni Murray left Woman’s Hour, signing off with Helen Reddy’s feminist anthem, I am Woman,” he concluded.

Paying tribute to the veteran broadcaster, BBC‘s Director General Tim Davie said: “This is incredibly sad news and our thoughts are with all of Dame Jenni’s family and friends. Dame Jenni was, simply put, a broadcasting icon.
“Throughout her three groundbreaking many years on Woman’s Hour, Jenni created a secure space for her viewers thanks to her heat, intelligence and braveness. We shall all miss her terribly. Her legacy endures in the numerous conversations she began, the many points she championed and the lives she touched.”
Radio 4 controller Mohit Bakaya described Jenni as “heat, fearless and beloved by listeners”, adding: “During her many years at Woman’s Hour, she helped form the national dialog with intelligence, rigour and a exceptional potential to join with audiences.
“Jenni leaves an indelible legacy on generations of listeners. We are profoundly grateful for her outstanding contribution to Radio 4, and she will be deeply missed.”
