BBC Breakfast star hospitalised for weeks as she | UK News
But after she handed the quarter mark, she and Guinness World Record holder Mimi Anderson had been compelled to cut their journey short after enduring dangerously cold winds. The dynamic duo had educated for months in preparation for the sub-zero temperatures, but the freezing temperatures made it not possible to continue.
On Monday (March 30), the beloved presenter issued a health update from her hospital mattress as she mentioned her “long road to recovery” forward. Alongside a clip of her biking through the Arctic Circle, she shared a prolonged update online.
It read: “10 days ago, I set off on what I knew would likely be my toughest challenge yet. An Ice Bike race in the Arctic Circle, Northern Canada, with Mimi Anderson to raise money for young people to access the Duke of Edinburgh award.
“We educated for months, deliberate meticulously, had all the correct package, but when temperatures fell to below -40 (with wind chill more like -50), we had been, unsurprisingly, damaged by the weather and both suffered frostbite. Mine is worst on my toes.
“I have been in hospital ever since, both in Inuvik and in the UK, and have been given incredible care. I will be OK, but I am only at the start of an even bigger challenge, a long and bumpy road to recovery. Thanks to all of you who have messaged me. I am touched by your love and support.”
It did not take long before her loyal legion of followers flocked to the feedback to share their well-wishes. One consumer wrote: “I’m so sorry the elements were not in your favour [daf emoji] Wishing you a full recovery and as much rest as needed.”
Another agreed: “Oh Louise, sorry to hear you’re still recovering. Take your time, and you’ll be back stronger than ever. Sending best wishes.” A 3rd echoed: “Goodness Louise, so sorry it’s been so hard. Thankfully, you are being taken care of now [prayer emoji]. Sending much love and strength for a full recovery [heart emoji].”
Louise had been 14 hours into the Inuvik Weekend Warrior Fat Bike Challenge – a three-day cycle across frozen rivers, distant highways and Canada’s Arctic wilderness – when the pair had been compelled to withdraw.
March average temperatures in the Northwest Territories vary from -13C to -23C, but the area was notably cold on March 20, with temperatures dropping to -30C in some areas. Wind chills reached -36C, which might trigger frostbite to set in in as little as 10 minutes.
