Silent Witness returned to screens for its twenty ninth sequence, but it was one character in explicit who acquired fans speaking. This time, the group are investigating crimes in Birmingham after being primarily based in London. Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) and Jack Hodgson (David Caves) are now a married couple and are once again joined by Harriet Maven (Maggie Steed) and Kit Brooks (Francesca Mills) as they sort out new circumstances.

However, just minutes into the first episode, it was Jack’s look, and his surprising new facial hair, that despatched fans flocking to social media to share their ideas. “I don’t like Jack with a beard,” one said as another agreed: “I don’t like Jack’s new facial hair..” Another requested: “What’s going on with Jack’s dyed hair and beard?”

The questions did not stop there as fans turned to his outfit alternative next, with one writing: “Why is Jack dressed like Edmund Blackadder?”

“Forsooth! What’s Jack come as?” another shared, while another person echoed: “Is Jack being eaten alive by the roll-neck of his own jumper?”

“Jack is giving me Shakespeare vibes with the facial hair and the turtle neck,” added another fan. Not everybody was criticising the character’s new look however, as one commented: “Okay, how does Jack actually manage to look kinda hot with that facial hair?”

Sharing snaps of Jack from the new sequence, another gushed: “Sorry it has to be said but YUM.”

The BBC made the choice to transfer manufacturing from London to Birmingham for the upcoming sequence, which BBC Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore said will “boost high impact content production”.

Discussing filming in the new location, Fox told TV Guide: “Birmingham is a really beautiful city. There are some incredible industrial buildings where the history of Birmingham feels very present. That was as exciting to discover as the beautiful countryside, which is close to Birmingham, which we were also fortunate to film in. I think it gives the series a different aesthetic feel.”

Opening up about where the 2 titular characters are at the start of season 29, Caves said: “Jack and Nikki are settling into a new home in Birmingham and getting used to The Bowman Centre. They are trying to find a bit of balance. The set-up [of the move to Birmingham] happened at the end of the previous series.

“The writers have woven the transfer into the story properly. The group is adapting to new environment, new faces, and a barely different tempo of life. It’s a correct reset, but of course, being Silent Witness we don’t precisely get a quiet start.”
