BBC viewers had been left livid and slammed Lucy Powell for “wasting air time” when she dodged answering the definition of “authentic Labour”, a time period coined by PM-in-waiting Andy Burnham. The deputy chief of the Labour Party spoke to Laura Kuenssberg on her BBC Sunday programme as the journalist pressed for particulars about the incoming new administration.

Speaking from her Manchester home, the politician was assured that Burnham will ship a “bigger, clearer, and more ambitious vision”, and she was requested to outline a phrase said by Burnham in the Labour chief speech as Laura quizzed: “One of the other words that he used, was that a promise to become authentically Labour. What is ‘authentic labour’?”

The Manchester Central MP said: “Authentic Labour is Labour. It’s not trying to out-reform Reform, it’s not trying to out-green the Greens. It’s about being clear what Labour stands for.

“We had been invented to signify the pursuits of working people, and be on the facet of extraordinary communities proper around the nation, and to re-balance the best way the nation is run, and that’s what Labour is about. We are for alternative, we’re for justice, and it has been actually clear about those issues.”

Laura followed up and asked a question that left Powell speechless, quizzing: “Doesn’t that just sound like every little thing?”

However, her speech sparked outrage online as viewers took to social media, with one complaining: “Word salad! Zero details or logic.” Another person agreed: “Complete phrase salad and saying nothing from Lucy Powell on Laura Okay show this morning. The last two years have been a full catastrophe for the nation and sadly I can not see it getting any better under Burnham.”

A third slammed Powell: “Lucy Powell making an attempt to persuade herself, and the nation, that Andy Burnham is Labour’s new messiah. And that every drawback they’d under Starmer has magically vanished in a single day. That’s not optimism, it is delusion on an industrial scale.”

Others felt offended when the politician repeatedly mentioned the term “extraordinary people”.
