Billy Idol is trying back on the years he practically didn’t survive.
The 69-year-old rock icon premiered his new documentary Billy Idol Should Be Dead at the Tribeca Festival, where he opens up about harrowing experiences with drugs, habit, and a near-fatal motorbike crash that almost ended his profession, and life.
“I nearly died that night,” Idol mentioned, recounting a 1984 heroin overdose in London during the movie’s opening scene.
“And the next day, we’re on Top of the Pops doing ‘Eyes Without a Face.’”
According to Idol, he turned blue after taking a number of strains of heroin with pals and was only revived after being plunged into an ice bathtub.
By the mid-’80s, Idol’s drug use had spiraled.
The scenario turned so dire that his father, an accountant, flew to the U.S. to stage an intervention.
“I needed someone to show me they loved me beyond the music,” Idol recalled.
“I suppose when you’re that young, you just don’t see the red flags that much.”
Then, in 1990, tragedy struck again. Idol was practically killed in a motorbike accident that shattered his leg and required intensive hospitalization.
Ironically, it was in restoration that he finally stepped away from drugs, thanks to a morphine drip that dulled his cravings.
“I thought, ‘When are you ever going to be on something this pure again? Never,’” he mentioned.
“How high can you get? I think I’m there.”
