Billy Steinberg, the “visionary” lyricist behind Madonna‘s mega-hit Like A Virgin, has sadly died at the age of 75 after battling cancer. He was best identified for penning the 1984 hit pop monitor, but also labored with artists including Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Demi Lovato. He penned tracks like Eternal Flame, True Colours and Alone.

His death has been confirmed by lawyer Laurie Soriano, with his household releasing a assertion which read: “Billy Steinberg’s life was a testomony to the enduring energy of a well-written music – and to the concept that honesty, when set to music, can outlive us all.

“Yet those closest to him knew that what mattered most was not recognition, but connection – the magic of listening to a crowd sing back one thing that once lived only in his pocket book.”

The assertion branded Steinberg a “visionary lyricist, devoted husband, loving father, and one of the most influential songwriters of his era”.

The iconic songwriter is survived by his wife Trina, two sons and two stepchildren.

Tributes have been flooding in from devastated fans, one of whom tweeted: “Oh Billy!! You have been a particular one. You gave us the music! Now relaxation straightforward!”

Another echoed: “Billy Steinberg’s lyrics outlined a era. From True Colors to Like A Virgin, his phrases turned timeless anthems. Rest in peace to a true songwriting legend.”

While a third penned: “Loved his tunes. Thanks for being a half of so many lives.”
