True independence seems to be different for everybody. While people look ahead to their time off celebrating the Fourth of July tomorrow, Black people discovered their freedom in different methods. Check out a listing of freedom movies that have fun Black figures and the group at large on their quest for true liberation.
Liberation seems to be like expression through music, artwork and activism for Black people. Black people have always discovered revolutionary methods to discover true company over our lives and legacies. In the movies listed below, iconic Black leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and Shirley Chisolm’s tales are celebrated and uplifted. Meanwhile, fictional tales like The Color Purple and Alice, rooted in the realities of Black people, focus on freedom from oppression, both outdoors and within our communities.
These topics are all so layered, but in the end they talk about the core of what the Fourth of July is about – freedom. However, the real query is who’s really gained independence?
Independence Day, recognized colloquially as the Fourth of July, is a federal vacation in the United States commemorating the Declaration of Independence, which was ratified by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, establishing the United States of America.
This “great” nation was primarily began by immigrants who set out for a better future for themselves and their households. Now, it’s turned into the very place that they once escaped. It’s an particularly haunting expertise for the people who constructed this nation.
While we will’t change that, we will completely honor the tales of Black people who have sought out freedom for themselves.
