While selling Netflix’s documentary The Greatest Night in Pop, he defined why the historic session, full of more than 40 of music’s largest — together with Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Diana Ross, Billy Joel and Paul Simon — was not the best for Dylan.
“Poor Bob was having a nervous breakdown,” Richie admitted.
It’s not precisely a shock that Dylan was out of his factor during the recording periods. It’s stunning he even agreed to sing on the observe in any respect.
Even by the Nineteen Eighties, Dylan was already recognized for being reclusive, having gone into a self-imposed exile from about 1966 to 1971, fickle, and unable to work nicely with others.
By the Nineteen Eighties, although, Dylan was a completely different man. He needed a hit to get him by the lull in his profession, so he employed producer Arthur Baker, recognized for his inventive collaboration with New Order, to work on his 1985 report Empire Burlesque, and even agreed to make music videos for MTV.
So, signing on to be a half of We Are the World wasn’t probably the most outrageous factor he was doing on the time. Plus, the charity shong was the type of musical activism he may get behind.
Still, Dylan wasn’t utterly bought on the project. “People shopping for a track and the money going to ravenous people in Africa is, you recognize, a worthwhile concept,” he later mentioned during an interview on 20/20, “but I wasn’t so convinced about the message of the song, to tell you the truth. I don’t think people can save themselves, y’know.”

Richie, who hosted the telecast, found himself co-host of the session along with Jackson and producer Quincy Jones.
He would later admit that all three were concerned about whether Dylan would actually show up. “Bob is a sweetheart,” he instructed UPI in 2021. “But when Bob says ‘I’ll be there,’ you have to say to yourself, ‘Okay, did he get the right day? Is it the right time? Is he gonna be there?'”
To everyone’s shock, Dylan was one of the first to arrive, with journalist David Breskin, covering the session for LIFE Magazine, writing that a bomber-clad Dylan “slouched” in, “stone-faced, and sits down in the seat closest to the door.”
To Dylan’s horror, Diana Ross noticed him the second she entered and promptly jumped in his lap crying: “BOBBY!”
Al Jarreau had a fanboy meltdown, going up to Dylan and gushing: “Bobby, in my own stupid way I just want to tell you that I love you.” Dylan ignored it and walked away, leaving Jarreau in his wake wailing: “My idol!” by his tears.
Bruce Springsteen had a higher expertise along with his hero. The Boss went in for a hug and Dylan responded warmly. Kim Carnes additionally had a good second with Dylan. “He was easy to talk to,” she later instructed The Independent. “Exactly how I would have expected him to be.”
Things acquired uncomfortable again as footage reveals Dylan backed into a nook by Willie Nelson and Huey Lewis, who converse at him about their golf sport.
While recording the track, Dylan regarded even more uncomfortable and remoted as he takes his place among the many choir of music’s most elite.
When he went to report his solo, he choked from not having the ability to project his voice, and retreats into self-consciousness.
“Bob Dylan, when he was recording his solo piece, stepped up to the microphone and sounded nothing like Bob Dylan,” recalled Hollywood mega-agent Ken Kragen, who organized the session. “He was so nervous because he was not used to recording with all these other stars there.”
Jones realizes the issue immediately, and orders the studio cleared, apart from Stevie Wonder and Richie.
“If you’re thrown in a room with a bunch of singers, you have a tendency to get psyched out and you want to sound like them,” Richie defined to The Hollywood Reporter. “But everyone that we chose as the lead vocalists, they were not singers, they were stylists.
“We only had half a line and, in certain cases, one line to sing. We had to make sure that whoever was singing, your voice was identifiable right away. Now, Bob Dylan has an identifiable voice instantly. But he was trying to sing it another way. We kept saying, ‘No, just sing it like Bob Dylan.'”
Wonder, in Breskin’s description, was “the secret agent to make him comfortable,” taking a seat at the piano and launching into a pitch-perfect Bob Dylan impression to demonstrate what they wanted.
“Just do your thing, man,” mentioned Quincy. “That’s something nobody can do better than you.” Dylan tried again and the outcome was higher, however Dylan wasn’t impressed: “Ugh, I can do that better,” he mentioned. Jones objected, exclaiming: “That’s fantastic!”
Dylan would not shopping for it, saying: “I don’t think that’s any good at all. You can erase that,” but after a few takes Dylan isn’t satisfied and asked to do it again. “I’m telling you, we got it!” insisted Jones, who bear hugs the singer, quieting him down.
