CBS pulled The Price Is Right from its schedule this week as March Madness takes over the community’s prime-time lineup, irritating viewers.
The long-running game show went darkish March 18-19 when the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament started, and remained off the air through Friday.
The preemption was not surprising; CBS had deliberate to clear airtime for the match, but the prolonged absence highlighted the dimensions of March Madness’s grip on community tv.
The NCAA match options 68 groups competing in seven rounds of basketball across around three weeks.
The Price Is Right was far from the only casualty of CBS’s sports activities programming overhaul.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, Ghosts, Matlock, and Elsbeth didn’t air Thursday night time. Sheriff Country, Fire Country, and Boston Blue didn’t air on Friday.
The daytime lineup confronted even more cuts, with The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, and The Doctors for two days.
The schedule shake-up has not sat effectively with viewers on social media.
“March Madness should be on a pay-per-view channel,” one Reddit consumer wrote in frustration.
Another echoed the sentiment, saying, “What makes it even worse is I hate basketball.”
The remaining schedule is as follows:
- March 21-22: Second Round
- March 26-27: Sweet 16
- March 28-29: Elite Eight
- April 4 and 6: Final Four at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis
The Price Is Right, which has aired constantly on CBS since 1972, sometimes attracts a loyal daytime viewers.
