Chargers stick with Trey Lance as backup | College News
The Chargers’ backup quarterback competitors is over — for now.
Despite DJ Uiagalelei outperforming Trey Lance in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Rams, the incumbent was named QB2 once again, as the Chargers announced their initial 53-man roster Sunday night.
“My mindset has just been stacking days,” Lance said. “As many days as I can have; good days that I could feel good about. Good reps [or] bad reps, I learn from them all.”
Choosing Lance, who is acquainted with the position and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s system from their shared time with the San Francisco 49ers, was one of a number of attention-grabbing roster strikes the Chargers made on cut-down day.
Most notably, punter and nine-year veteran JK Scott was launched alongside working back Jaret Patterson.
It wouldn’t be stunning if the Chargers introduced Scott back this week. However, he had a tough preseason, in which he confirmed abysmal tackling effort and shanked a punt.
“As competitors, yeah, I don’t like seeing that on tape,” particular groups coordinator Ryan Ficken said.

Some “bubble” gamers, though, did make the cut; cornerback Rodney Shelley is one of them.
The undrafted rookie put a bow on a strong camp by incomes 5 tackles and a fairly cross breakup against the Rams. Plus, the Chargers made room for him by trading cornerback Avery Smith to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2027 sixth-round choose. The Chargers also traded defensive lineman TeRah Ewards to the Carolina Panthers for a 2028 sixth-round draft choose.
Jacob Spomer is another undrafted rookie who will stay in Los Angeles.
The offensive lineman impressed during training camp and provides depth after the Chargers assigned offensive lineman Branson Taylor to injury reserve alongside two-way trenches trooper Scott Matlock.
Of course, some waived gamers might see prolonged alternatives with the Chargers through the observe squad.
“I can’t really think of anybody that I’m going to tell their football lives are over to,” Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday. “I can’t think of one guy I’d say that to. I just don’t believe that.
“I’m probably going to put myself in their shoes and hopefully give them some great advice [on] what to do next. It’s going to be said with encouragement and love, because I truly believe in them.”
