All eyes in the golf world might be fixed on Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, this week as the Charles Schwab Challenge prepares to tee off.

This weekend will see the PGA Tour’s most interesting — minus Brooks Koepka — battle it out for the Charles Schwab Challenge title in Texas. By Sunday, the victor might be richly rewarded. The event’s whole prize purse is $9.9 million, with the champion taking home $1.78 million.

Yet that will not be the only reward on offer at Colonial Country Club. The winner of the event — which dates back to 1946 and is also identified as the Colonial National Invitation — will obtain the Leonard Trophy, along with the standard tartan jacket.

Past champions embrace Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, and Ben Griffin, who claimed last yr’s title at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

The champion will also drive away in a car, a custom that was established back in 2019. Griffin’s triumph last yr earned him a 1992 powder-blue Schwab Defender. However, with the PGA Tour season in full swing, this yr’s winner could have to wait before getting behind the wheel, if Griffin’s remarks from last yr are something to go by.

“I’m not home very much and so it’s not a huge deal for me to win a car and not have access to it right now,” explained Griffin last yr.

“Because I’m in the middle of a season and I just, I’m not home a crazy amount to where I would really enjoy it as much as I would want to. So I’m still playing a lot of golf, still enjoying it.

“It might be actually cool to have that car finally and I do know it is going to be good when I do because they’re working actually laborious to make it up.”
