Controversial streamer Hasan Piker has thrown a curveball into the already heated Senate race in Michigan as candidate Abdul El-Sayed makes an attempt to maintain a rally.

El-Sayed, who beforehand served as the Wayne County health director, is at the moment backed by Independent Senator Bernie Sanders and has already gained vital backing from progressives. However, the choice to invite Piker to the University of Michigan and Michigan State University has raised a number of eyebrows among his Democratic rivals.

The inclusion of Piker in the rallies has even precipitated some Democrats to fear that the involvement might make it simpler for Republicans to take back the seats later. One of El-Sayed’s opponents, Rep. Haley Stevens, told the Jewish Insider that Piker is “the exact opposite of someone I’d be campaigning with.”

State Sen. Mallory McMorrow took things to the next level and compared Piker to Right-wing influencer Nick Fuentes, a well-known antisemite. “It is somebody who says extremely offensive things in order to generate clicks and views and followers, which is not entirely different from somebody like Nick Fuentes,” she told the Jewish Insider.

“[Piker] is a provocateur, to put it lightly, who says things that are misogynistic and antisemitic, and said that the United States deserved 9/11,” she said. “That is not somebody that you should be campaigning with at a moment when there is clearly a lot of pain and trauma across our state.”

“How do you bring everybody together, especially when there are difficult conversations, where there aren’t easy answers? You don’t fan the flames and stoke division just to get attention,” she added. Matt Bennett, who works for the center-left think tank Third Way, called El-Sayed a “disgrace to the Democratic Party.”

“This is disgusting,” Bennet wrote. “You are a shame to the Democratic Party.”

Piker recently caused controversy when he claimed that the October 7th attack by Hamas on Israel was a “direct consequence” of both the Israeli and U.S.government actions and that if the rapes happened as part of the Hamas campaign, it “doesn’t change the dynamic for me.” Shortly after making the statement, Piker was forced to defend himself against the accusations of antisemitism.

According to Piker, the criticism was more focused toward the U.S. and Israeli governments. However, the comments could come back to haunt him as many voters inside Michigan are young progessives and has a large Muslim community.

El-Sayed, however, attempted to defend his choice to have Piker. According to the Senate hopeful, Piker is meeting voters as they are and pointed out that he was allowed to stream from the 2024 DNC.

“Other candidates can spend their time policing where conversations occur and who will get to be a half of them if they need,” a spokesperson told The Hill in an email.”Abdul is concentrated on exhibiting up in all places.”

Michigan Democratic strategist Adrian Hemond told The Hill that Piker’s presence within the marketing campaign would possibly permit McMorrow to start wooing voters who are turned off by El-Sayed’s selection of speaker.
