Country star shares moms reaction to him dropping | Music News

Country music star Hudson Westbrook has revealed his mother’s reaction to him dropping out of school for his music profession that has since skyrocketed.

The 20-year-old singer has taken the nation music style by storm since 2024 with the help of hit single Take It Slow, and is now about to release his debut album this summer season.

“We went from zero to a hundred really quick, but we’re trying to go zero to a million,” Westbook advised People. “That’s the goal.”

Westbrook, who just months prior was enrolled in school, realized his life had formally modified when a group of high college boys stopped him for a image outdoors a grocery store in Central Texas where he grew up.

He recalled: “I was like, ‘All right, y’all. I can’t take the picture right now. I’m on the phone.’ I just kept rolling. And so then I go inside and I’m talking on the phone, taking my sweet time, not thinking about anything.

“And then I stroll out an hour and 45 minutes later, and those youngsters are still ready there to take a image. I used to be like, ‘All proper. This is legit’.”

Westbrook was raised on a Texas cattle farm, and enrolled in his freshman year at Texas Tech University studying oil and gas, thinking he would become “a landman.” He never thought he was “good” enough to sing professionally.

“I used to be in high college enjoying covers, and it was for enjoyable. My mother can be like, ‘Wow, that’s actually good, Hudson,’ but I’m like, ‘That’s my mother!’ [Other] people are like, ‘Yeah, you are actually good,’ but it wasn’t ever like, ‘You’re going to put out an album someday, and it is going to presumably be on a Billboard chart.’ That was never the intention,” he said.

Westbrook added that’s “form of the best half about it.” He hasn’t been exposed to music for a long time, and he thinks “it is a contemporary factor that I have never been in Nashville for 10 years.”

He was in college 10 months ago, “dwelling the faculty life,” so all he has to do is “keep in mind that child when I’m writing and how it is relatable for everybody else out in the world.”

Westbrook has gotten some of the best industry advice from country icon Miranda Lambert, whose music he often covers.

“She was like, ‘Just do your own factor and don’t be concerned about all the facet stuff. Make your artwork and go do the issues around your artwork that you need to do. And do not ever change who you had been before,'” he said. “She’s unimaginable.”

Westbook admittedly sprung the news on his mother that he’d dropped out of college to focus on his music career.

He explained: “The day that I dropped out, I used to be enjoying the most important show in my life. My mother got here, and I stroll on stage, I say, ‘Yeah, this one’s known as Two Way Drive.’

“And I always do this quick thing [where I say] ‘I was breaking bulls in Fort Worth. I broke up with this girl. I drove back and forth, so I ended up thinking about her a lot. Sometimes you got to write a song about it in the dorm room. It’s called Two Way Drive… And I dropped out!’ and then we hit it.”

Eventually, Westbrook seen his mother was no longer in the viewers.

“Mom comes backstage, waiting to chew me [out] like, ‘You did what!’ What the f— did you do?'” he mentioned of her reaction. “And I was like, ‘Mom, I promise. It’ll be okay!'”

When requested why he thinks his music resonating with so many people, the singer mirrored: “I think from a marketing standpoint, I have blond hair and blue eyes, and I wear boots and jeans. It does not hurt.

“And my mother gave me a good smile. I’m getting Invisalign, though, because they’re getting a little whacked,” he admits. “But I believe it is like, you don’t need to do what somebody’s already achieved. I make sure to be actual.

“There’s a type of music that I wanted to hear, and I’ve never been able to hear it. So, I just decided to make it.”
