Max McNown’s life has been reworked after making the leap from barista at Starbucks to selling out tours in just a few short years.

The 24-year-old Oregon native grew to become an web sensation and has quickly risen through the ranks to set up himself as one of nation music‘s most sought-after artists.

He opened up candidly about his hit Can’t Hide Light, revealing it was impressed by his brother’s brave battle with cancer.

His youthful brother, Brock, was recognized with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2019. His grueling five-year combat against the disease noticed him endure a number of rounds of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant during the pandemic.

Fortunately, he efficiently accomplished treatment and is now in remission. Max mirrored to the Mirror, “Watching how he handled that battle and the joy he still brought to everybody around him. There was a light within him, and that was something that just blew my mind, because everything seemed to be going wrong, and to still be kind, and you know, be a bright shining light for the people around you is so difficult when you’re not feeling very bright yourself, and so that was what Can’t Hide Light was about.”

Continuing, he explained that despite what the world does to you, “your light is not able to be hidden,” which is what impressed the music.

His brother’s affect extends far past that single monitor, as Max referred to him as “an inspiration for all of [his] music,” noting that “when you’ve seen somebody go through something where you don’t know if they’re going to live or not, every day is a successful perseverance.”

“Every single day that you make it through with a positive attitude, with loving others, the way I see it, it brings me so much gratitude,” he added, “because I look at that and I think, if he’s gone through all that and he’s not complaining to me and he’s just pushing forward, who am I to worry about my voice not feeling great before a show?”

Furthermore, Max explained that it put every thing into a “very zoomed-out perspective,” main him to really feel gratitude for all the nice that’s in the world.

The 24-year-old has just dropped a new album, with his latest single, First Born Daughter, already making waves across streaming companies. Discussing the monitor, Max explained, “First Born Daughter was one of those where I just wrote from my heart about how I felt, and people seemed to take it as their own.

“The first time I posted it on social media, just a bunch of people have been like, ‘I’m a firstborn daughter, I hoped a music would come out about me.’ And then I’ve just watched it grow, and it is always so enjoyable to see that, because as an artist, you always have self-doubt, you recognize, it is always going to be there.”

Despite his meteoric success, Max stays humble, crediting his father for invaluable wisdom, remarking how his dad told him that releasing music is him “giving” something to his fans, and that what it meant to him writing it, may be “one thing utterly different for them.”

“And that assertion has been a half of my mindset every time I step into a writing room, because I feel I do not need to suppose about what the followers need to hear, you recognize, I never attempt to suppose about writing songs that are meant to say one thing to them and inform them how to really feel,” he explained. “I need to write songs that I really feel like I need to write and allow them to do what they may with it and relate it to their life. A Lot More Free is the best instance. I’ve heard a whole lot, if not 1000s, of tales, and none of them are the precise same.”
