Defund the Police Made No Sense – RedState

There are few issues fairly like watching a politician finally agree with actuality long after everybody else has already been dealing with it.

Enter former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D), a failed 2020 presidential candidate who now says, after the fact, that “defund the police” was a unhealthy thought. Not a difficult miscalculation or a nuanced strategic error, but one thing far less complicated. It didn’t work.

Which, of course, is strictly what thousands and thousands of Americans had been saying at the time, including business homeowners boarding up storefronts, residents watching crime climb, and communities questioning whether or not public security had quietly change into optionally available.

But he’s right here now, armed with hindsight.

“In retrospect, the whole concept of ‘defund the police’ made no sense.”

“In retrospect” does a lot of heavy lifting there, compressing years of coverage choices, finances shifts, and penalties into a neat conclusion that feels nearly incidental.

And just to make the level unmistakable:

“So defund was a mistake. And I understand where it came from, but it was a mistake.”

A mistake, but not the sort that fades shortly or will get corrected quietly. This was a governing determination that carried real weight, reshaped priorities, and performed out in real time, long before anybody felt snug calling it what it was.

At the time, it was introduced as management and reform, a essential rethinking of public security where funding was not being decreased so a lot as “reimagined” or “reallocated” into a broader imaginative and prescient that was supposed to produce better outcomes. Questioning that premise was not handled as a good-faith critique. It was handled as resistance.

Now, years later, that same thought is being described as one thing that “made no sense.”

Not controversial. Not difficult. Just basically flawed.

So what modified?

Policies don’t drift into nonsense over time. They either replicate actuality, or they don’t, and this one never did. It didn’t require years of hindsight to consider, only a basic understanding of what police departments do and what occurs when their capability is decreased.

After watching the coverage unfold largely as critics predicted, the conclusion arrives not as a reckoning, but as a quiet acknowledgment that lands years after the fact, with little curiosity in revisiting the certainty that drove it in the first place.

And this was not summary. New York City shifted roughly $1 billion away from its police division at the top of the motion, while tensions had been already elevated. That was not messaging. That was governance, a real-time determination defended as the proper stability and now decreased to one thing that “made no sense.”

Because the sample is acquainted. Advance a sweeping thought, dismiss the warnings, live through the outcomes, and then, once the penalties are no longer theoretical, reframe the end result as apparent.

“In retrospect,” it made no sense.

The downside is just not that it took this long to say it out loud.
