The Department of Homeland Security will run out of money to pay workers’ salaries the first week of May, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said Tuesday as lawmakers race to end a two-month shutdown of the agency.

The remarks come as Republicans are forging forward with a dangerous go-it-alone strategy for totally funding the agency.
