Donald Trump announces National Guard will be sent | Political News
President Trump said he’s sending the National Guard to Memphis, Tennessee, to tackle crime issues with the help of the mayor and the governor.
Trump announced the news on Fox and Friends on Friday as he spoke about crime in Washington, D.C., and revealed that the individual who shot and killed Charlie Kirk on Wednesday is in custody.
He said that both the mayor and governor are “happy” about the deployment, including that town is “deeply troubled.”
“We’re going to fix that just like we did in Washington,” he added.
Trump has deployed the National Guard to Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, California, and threatened to send it to other cities, including Chicago, Illinois, and New York City, New York.
Trump noted he “would have preferred going to Chicago,” where politicians have disagreed with his plans, saying it was a “hostile” place with “professional agitators.”
Trump initially deployed troops to Los Angeles in early June despite objections from Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom by placing the California National Guard under federal control, known as Title 10, to safeguard federal facilities from demonstrations over immigration enforcement operations.
In addition to 4,000 guard personnel, Trump subsequently dispatched 700 active duty Marines, prompting California to file a lawsuit challenging the intervention.
Meanwhile, the distinctive position of the District of Columbia National Guard – with Trump serving as its commander in chief – has allowed him to utilize it for various purposes ranging from armed patrols to waste collection without encountering legal obstacles.
Since it operates under state rather than federal orders, legal limitations on law enforcement activities don’t apply.
Donald Trump also revealed on Fox & Friends on Friday that the Charlie Kirk shooter is “in custody” following the assassination of the Turning Point CEO at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
The US President acknowledged, “With a high degree of certainty, we now have the suspect in custody.”
Trump expressed hope that the shooter would be convicted and receive capital punishment for the crime. He mentioned that he chose not to view the viral video of Kirk’s killing that circulated online.
“Can I always say I feel just to shield us all and so Fox would not get sued and we all do not get sued and the whole lot else, but I feel with a high degree of certainty, we now have him in custody,” Trump declared during the live television broadcast on Friday.
“A minister introduced him to a US Marshal and the daddy satisfied the son this is it and I’m always subject to be corrected, just supplying you with based on what I’m listening to they will offer you – I just heard about it 5 minutes before I walked in. As I’m strolling in they said trying good, they’ve the individual they wished,” Trump continued.
