President Donald Trump said he’s suspending signing an executive order on AI because he was involved it will harm the AI industry.
The president was anticipated to signal the execurive order on Thursday afternoon but it was delayed “because I didn’t like certain aspects of it,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. Trump said, the U.S. is forward of China and the remainder of the world on AI and “I don’t need to do something that’s going to get in the best way of that lead.”
He added that AI is “causing tremendous good,” and he was concerned that the executive order “could have been a blocker.”
The executive order was intended to give the government the power to evaluate artificial intelligence models before they are publicly released, people working on the order said, The New York Times reported, makring a shift for an administration that promoted a hands-off approach to the powerful technology.
The push for some kind of government action to vet the most powerful AI systems follows growing concern within the banking industry and other institutions about the leaps in AI’s abilities to find cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the world’s software.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and outgoing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell convened an urgent meeting with Wall Street CEOs in April, warning them about the cybersecurity risks posed by Anthropic’s AI model, Claude Mythos.
Trump also announced an overhaul of two Biden-era Environmental Protection Agency rules on refrigerants as part of a push to lower grocery costs for Americans.
One action will extend the deadlines for grocery stores and other companies to phase out the use of climate-damaging hydrofluorocarbons for refrigeration under the 2023 Technology Transitions Rule. Hydrofluorocarbons are considered “tremendous pollution” that, while short-lived in the ambiance, are more highly effective than carbon dioxide.
The transfer is anticipated to make refrigerants out there for supermarkets, owners, and other companies, which the White House says will produce $900 million in financial savings.
The EPA is also proposing to amend the 2024 Emissions Reduction and Reclamation program to exempt all highway refrigerant home equipment used to transport items from new leak necessities for hydrofluorocarbons.
The White House tasks an addition $1.5 billion in financial savings.
