U.S. President Donald Trump escalated his threats toward Fed Chair Jerome Powell after hinting at commencing a lawsuit against him in a fiery Truth Social post Tuesday morning.
Despite hiring him in 2017, the president has long taunted the central banker chief over disagreements about reducing rates of interest. Trump has repeatedly requested Powell to decrease charges, but Powell has suggested and ruled against it, fearing financial repercussions.
“Jerome ‘Too Late’ Powell must NOW lower the rate. Steve ‘Manouychin’ really gave me a ‘beauty’ when he pushed this loser. The damage he has done by always being Too Late is incalculable,” Trump wrote Tuesday on Truth Social.
“Fortunately, the economy is sooo good that we’ve blown through Powell and the complacent Board.”
Trump just lately switched gears and started attacking Powell for a years-old construction project as a means to assault his character. Now, the president is threatening a lawsuit over the federal building renovations.
After touring, Trump threatened to fire Powell over his handling of the construction tasks.
“Generally speaking, what would I do? I’d fire them,” Trump told a reporter in late July while standing next to Powell.
Economist specialists worry that Powell’s dismissal may risk undermining the political independence of the Fed and spark a stock market meltdown that leads buyers to charge a premium on lending.
