The Trump administration launched a video from March 6 displaying the Department of Defense had struck rural Ecuador and what the administration said was a “narco-terrorist supply complex.”

The strike occurred at the request of Ecuador, to “detect, disrupt, and destroy designated terrorist organizations that fuel violence and corruption,” the X post from the Trump administration read.

But close by residents said the strikes bombed farms and houses in the San Martin village, according to a grievance filed by the residents with the Alliance of Organizations for Human Rights and represented by protection lawyer Maria Espinosa.

“Under the government’s banner of fighting crime and drug trafficking, human rights are being violated,” Espinosa said, according to USA Today. “Security cannot be built on serious human rights violations. The government has obligations and standards it must abide by.”

No residents died in the operations from early March, but residents are involved about their future with the heightened navy presence, Espinosa told the outlet. The village lies close to the border between Ecuador and Colombia.

Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa said on March 2 that, along with the U.S., the nation would struggle “narcoterrorism and illegal mining.”

Residents like Vicente Garrido, vice president of the San Martin village, who’s lived in the realm for practically 40 years, told USA Today the operation didn’t strike criminals but houses.

“The government’s version is that they bombed encampments of certain armed groups,” Garrido told the outlet. “But what we’re showing the world is that these aren’t encampments, these are peasants’ homes.”

The residents also spoke with the New York Times and said Ecuadorian troopers harassed the villagers on March 3, three days before the explosion that was posted by the Trump administration.

Examples embody the Ecuadorian troopers interrogating the employees, beating them and dousing the shelters and sheds with gasoline and igniting them after.

Three of the employees told the outlet anonymously that the soldier choked them and used electrical shocks on them, too.

Ecuador’s press release from March 6 famous that during the operation, weapons and evidence of “illicit activities” of the focused group have been discovered. The press release didn’t specify what weapons or other evidence have been concerned.

Miguel, a 32-year-old carpenter and father of two, told the Times that his farm was demolished. He denied that his space was a training camp.

“It’s an outrage,” Miguel said, stepping over his useless chickens while talking to the outlet. “It’s a lie that 50 people trained here. Where are they going to train? Out here in the open? There’s no logic.”

“Everywhere you look, there are animals: the cows I milk, the calves, the horses,” he said.

The Department of Defense said that the operation was performed through a lot of precautions. The spokesperson referred to the Department of Defense as the Department of War.

“All U.S. military actions are conducted through rigorous, multilayered targeting processes, and each target is validated through established procedures,” spokesperson Kingsley Wilson for the division said in a assertion to USA Today. “Cartel networks threaten the stability of our hemisphere, and the Department of War will continue working with committed partners to take decisive action against those who endanger our shared neighborhood.”
