Duffy warns airspace will be closed in one week if | Political News

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued a dire warning to Democrats as he spoke about the authorities shutdown on Tuesday, which is now in its thirty fifth day — tying the report for the longest in historical past.

Duffy warned of air journey “mass chaos,” including “mass flight delays” and “mass cancellations.”

“If you convey us to a week from today, Democrats, you will see mass chaos, you will see mass flight delays,” he told reporters at the press briefing. “You’ll see mass cancellations, and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace, because we just cannot manage it.” It comes as Americans are warned to rethink their Thanksgiving journey plans due to the shutdown.

Flight delays have turn out to be commonplace across the nation as the shutdown nears the report for the longest in U.S. historical past, with staffing shortages compounding the issue.

This past weekend noticed the most tough journey situations yet, with dozens of American airports experiencing long strains of annoyed vacationers.

Over 5,000 flights touring to and from U.S. airports had been delayed on Sunday alone, NBC News reported, while the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said it screened almost 2.7 million people across the nation.

More delays and cancellations are anticipated as the shutdown persists, Duffy said.

Air visitors controllers, who are relied on to coordinate plane within airspace, are being required to work, labeled important workers amid the shutdown. They’ve been pressured to work without pay.

Duffy said he needs them to return to work and added that those who do not will obtain a disappointing paycheck by the end of the week.

Speaking to CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Monday, the transportation secretary warned, “None of them can miss two paychecks. They all start — their home finances fall apart, and they’re going to have to look at taking second jobs or quitting and getting into another line of work. And the consequence of that is very real for our air system.”

DON’T MISS…

He underscored the need for more air visitors controllers in the first place, stating that the system is short anyplace from around 2,000 to 3,000 controllers. He said he is making an attempt to rent more.

On Monday night, there have been than 2,855 flights delayed and over 70 canceled that had been set to journey into and out of the U.S., with the bulk of them coming to or from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether or not staffing shortages and the federal government shutdown led to the delays or cancellations on Monday.
