Federal regulators are investigating nearly 3 million Teslas following studies of crashes linked to the automaker’s self-driving technology.
The US National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Thursday it was focusing on incidents in which Teslas failed to stop at crimson lights or drove on the fallacious aspect of the highway — sometimes slamming into other automobiles and inflicting accidents.
It’s the latest effort from regulators to scrutinize Elon Musk’s electric car maker, which has confronted federal probes for over three years.

This time, the NHTSA says it’s focusing on 58 instances that resulted in 14 crashes and 23 accidents.
The probe was described as a preliminary analysis that may escalate into a recall if the company finds issues that threaten public security.
The 2,882,566 automobiles being investigated have Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving,” or FSD, function, which is meant to full driving maneuvers while requiring the driving force to keep paying consideration.
In many of the instances cited by NHTSA, drivers complained that their Teslas didn’t give them enough warnings about surprising conduct, according to the company.
“This review will assess any warnings to the driver about the system’s impending behavior; the time given to drivers to respond; the capability of FSD to detect, display to the driver, and respond appropriately to traffic signals; and the capability of FSD to detect and respond to lane markings and wrong-way signage,” NHTSA acknowledged.
The company said it might also examine how “Full Self-Driving” capabilities when “approaching railroad crossings.”

NHTSA had already been probing “Full Self-Driving” in some 2.4 million Teslas after the function was blamed for 4 crashes, including a lethal 2023 incident.
That investigation has targeted on how the function labored during decreased roadway visibility.
The company has also been probing Tesla’s “smart summon” function, which lets drivers transfer their parked cars in the direction of them remotely, since January.

Tesla didn’t immediately reply a Post request for remark on the new investigation.
The automaker notes on its web site that both autopilot and “Full Self-Driving” “are intended for use with a fully attentive driver who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment.”
Last 12 months, Musk carried out a “hard requirement” that all potential Tesla patrons in North America obtain a demonstration of “Full Self-Driving” before receiving their automobiles.
