EU president Von der Leyen says Putin does not | Political News

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen criticized Vladimir Putin for his lack of presence at the peace talks with Ukraine on Thursday in Istanbul, Turkey, stating that it demonstrates Putin’s disinterest in peace.

President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had urged Putin to personally have interaction in peace talks with Zelensky concerning the continued three-year battle, but Putin dispatched lower-level delegates as a substitute, which many interpreted as an indication that Putin is detached to peace.

Consequently, Zelensky also opted to ship lower-ranking officers, with von der Leyen indicating that the EU is now compelled to impose additional sanctions on Russia due to Putin’s actions.

“The European Political Community was once founded when Russia‘s war of aggression started. It was founded to shape a European answer and to make sure that we have stability on the European continent,” von der Leyen remarked.

“Now we are three years on, and we could witness all during the last days President Putin’s true belief. He first called for a ceasefire around the anniversary of the 9th of May which he then never respected,” she added.

“Then, Ukraine, with the support of the EU and the United States called for a full and unconditional ceasefire over 30 days which President Putin then rejected, and finally he offered a meeting directly between Ukraine and Russia in Turkey but President Zelensky was ready to meet, President Putin never showed up,” reviews, the Irish Star.

“And this shows the true belief of President Putin: he does not want peace.”

Von der Leyen acknowledged that it is now the European Union’s accountability to ramp up stress on Russia to agree to finish the conflict, utilizing sanctions as leverage.

“This is why we’re working on a new package of sanctions. This package will include for example sanctions on Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2. It will include working on listing more vessels of the Russian shadow fleet and also lowering the oil price cap, and it will include more sanctions on the financial sector in Russia,” she detailed.

“For us it’s important : we want peace and therefore we have to increase the pressure on President Putin until he is ready for peace,” she emphasised.

The negotiations between the 2 events occurred on Friday.

A “Ukrainian source” knowledgeable CNN that the Russian delegation “did not have a mandate to make important decisions”.

“They are not ready to decide anything meaningful to end the war,” the source revealed.
