European leaders met for therapy night to plan

European leaders reportedly held a secret emergency assembly in Brussels in January to focus on whether or not to “break up” with President Trump.

The assembly came about around a round desk in the European Council headquarters identified as “The Space Egg,” according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal. Almost 30 leaders had been current at the gathering, which might later be called a “therapy night” because feelings ran so high.

No cameras, recordings, or telephones had been allowed in, and each world chief was told to come alone.

“We are drawing a line here,” French President Emmanuel Macron said at the assembly, according to a number of leaders and aides who had been current.​ The French chief also reportedly said that Europe had relied an excessive amount of on America, which was changing into a security risk.

“There is no going back,” he added, according to WSJ.​

At one level, the Belgian prime minister said that Europe risked changing into “a miserable slave” to the U.S. This allegedly prompted a response from Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, who said that while they may not like President Trump, he could possibly be reasoned with, the WSJ reported. ​

Meloni and Trump have since fallen out spectacularly, after the president accused her of “begging” for a picture with him during the G7 assembly in France last yr.​

Also during the key January gathering, the outlet reported that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz took a second to ask how Denmark’s Mette Frederiksen was doing because she appeared visibly shaken. This was after weeks of Trump claiming he was going to take Greenland from Denmark.​

Although not at the assembly itself, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had apparently been recurrently messaging some of Europe’s leaders, making an attempt to persuade them that “the old America isn’t coming back.”​

Since then, Europe’s and Canada’s ties with the U.S. have hung on, maybe after realizing that ending such a relationship could be too detrimental. ​

Now, many of those leaders are assembly with the president face-to-face once again at the NATO summit in Ankara. ​

The White House said Trump has been wanting ahead to having “constructive and frank conversations with many world leaders” at the assembly in Turkey. ​

“President Trump has effectively restored America’s standing on the world stage, and he has done more for NATO than anyone else. He also believes that some NATO members should do much more to fulfill their obligations,” said White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly forward of the event.​

However, at a press convention in Turkey on Tuesday, Trump was already voicing his frustration over the NATO alliance and their lack of backing the U.S. in the Iran struggle.​

“I was very disappointed with NATO, and frankly, if it weren’t held in Turkey, my friend happens to be a very strong leader, a very strong person. It’s possible that I wouldn’t have attended.”

“I was testing people,” he added, before later saying, “Italy turned us down, and Germany turned us down, and France turned us down, and it’s ok, but why are we spending hundreds of billions of dollars, and they’re not there for us. We’ve always been there for them.”
