FBI agents are “extremely fearful” of being fired with many starting to “pack up their desks,” as the Trump administration considers ousting staff concerned in investigations associated to the January 6 Capitol riots.
On Friday, the Trump administration fired a group of prosecutors concerned within the January 6 felony instances and demanded the names, titles and workplaces of hundreds of FBI staff who labored on the probes.
“I want to assure you that we continue to work with the Department of Justice to better understand the purpose for which the lists I referenced yesterday are being sought,” Acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll mentioned in a message to FBI workers on Saturday.
Around 4,000 FBI workers members are being requested to fill in surveys about their involvement within the January 6 probes.
The questionnaires ask staff to explain their workplace and title and to specify whether or not they participated in search warrants, carried out interviews and testified at trial, the Associated Press reported.
In a bulletin to its members, the FBI Agents Association urged staff to “stay calm” and urged them to not resign.
“There are several amongst our ranks who are extremely fearful of being removed — and some of those have started to pack up their desks,” the FBI Agents Association mentioned within the bulletin seen by NBC News.
“While we’d by no means advocate for bodily non-compliance, you need to be clear your elimination is just not voluntary.
“If you are told you will be terminated, make sure you get the termination notice in writing and forward it to us ASAP.”
About two dozen employees at the US attorney’s office in Washington were terminated on Friday. A memo by Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove also identified eight FBI senior executives who were ordered to retire or be fired by Monday.
Pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol on January 6 2021, sparking a violent and bloody clash with police officers in a bid to block the certification of election results.

Of the more than 1,500 people who have been charged with federal crimes within the riot, more than 1,000 people pleaded guilty. Another roughly 250 people have been convicted of crimes by a decide or a jury after a trial.
In a message to FBI staff on Saturday, Acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll mentioned agents don’t select which instances they’re assigned to.
“As career special agents — and fellow FBI employees — we know firsthand that none of us are assigned to matters based on anything other than the responsibilities of the roles in which we serve,” Driscoll wrote.
“So let it be absolutely clear that we do not view anyone’s identification on one of these lists as an indicator of misconduct.”
