The BBC has said any future transfer away from conventional tv broadcasts must guarantee viewers will not be left behind as plans for a doable digital-only future are thought of.

Director-General Matt Brittin told MPs that a potential switch-off of Freeview companies would only work if everybody may continue accessing BBC programmes and other free-to-air content.

Speaking to the Culture, Media and Sport committee, he said any timetable for the change — whether or not in 2034 or 2044 — would need a resolution for those who haven’t moved to online viewing.

Dennis Reed, from marketing campaign group Silver Voices, said the Government ought to guarantee that no one loses access before any swap takes place.

“Before anyone talks about switching off terrestrial television, the Government must be able to guarantee nobody will lose access to free TV through an aerial,” he said.

“Until that exists, the answer should be simple — protect Freeview and keep it free.”

Former Conservative chief Kemi Badenoch has also called for ensures that terrestrial tv will stay out there past 2034.

She said: “Labour should think very carefully before they and the BBC make the mistake of switching off free TV.

“Freeview is still the main approach that millions get their tv, significantly the aged and those with poor web connections.

“There are plenty of other ways the BBC could save money without making life more miserable for pensioners and those in rural areas.”

The debate comes as broadcasters study how audiences’ viewing habits are altering, with more people turning to streaming companies while many households continue to rely on conventional tv platforms.
