Period drama lovers have been raving about a beloved BBC tv collection which has viewers watching it on repeat. The drama collection Lark Rise to Candleford is impressed by the 1939 semi-autobiographical trilogy collection by Flora Thompson.

The show follows Laura Timmins (performed by Olivia Hallinan) who grows up in the little hamlet of Lark Rise in Rural Oxfordshire in the late nineteenth century. Later in the collection, which ran from 2008 to 2011, the protagonist moved to the market city of Candleford to work at the post workplace. The narrative explores the lives of numerous characters from the higher and decrease lessons.

Through Laura’s eyes, viewers observe her as she begins a new life under the wing of her mom’s cousin, Dorcas Lane (Julia Sawalha), who is the postmistress at the local post workplace.

Producers filmed the historic show in a collection of lavish places across Gloucestershire and Wiltshire that captured the beautiful British surroundings of the time.

The epic historic collection, which is free to stream on U, stars an ensemble solid led by Olivia Hallinan in the main function. They shared the screen with Brendan Coyle, Claudie Blakey, Mark Heap, and John Dagleish with a few acquainted faces popping up including Sarah Lancashire and Dawn French.

It didn’t take long before the show grew to become a large hit with viewers at the time, with the BBC collection later translated into 13 different languages including French, Chinese, German and Dutch.

Both the collection and the book have been widely praised by followers online, with one writing: “This is one of the best collection I’ve ever seen on BBC. I gorged on watching all 40 episodes on BritBox which I just adore.

“The series is very well filmed, with fantastic actors and actresses. The scenery is delightful, the fashions are enchanting, the storyline is well woven and addictive; at least it was for me.”

Another gushed: “I love this programme and become completely immersed in it. The acting is superb, and many of them have gone on to great things. I watch it whenever it comes on because it is very human and very skilled character interactions with no violence.”

A third confessed: “I rewatch it once a yar. I’m always devastated when it ends. I’m looking forward to reading the novels next.” Unfortunately, the show was cancelled after four series back in 2011, which sparked a huge uproar from fans online.

This prompted BBC controller Danny Cohen at the time to announce: “Lark Rise to Candleford has been a truly wonderful part of the BBC One schedule and we are incredibly grateful to writer Bill Gallagher and the team. But we feel the time is right to make room for new dramas which we hope will be taken to the nation’s hearts in the same way.”
