Black Sabbath band member Geezer Butler “wasn’t prepared” for how “frail” Ozzy Osbourne can be during their reunion efficiency. Bassist Geezer has now shared he was shocked to see singer Ozzy in such poor health in a new essay for The Sunday Times. Ozzy died final week, aged 76, just weeks after reuniting with his bandmates. Geezer wrote in the Times: “The rehearsals for that final show started a month before at a studio in the Oxfordshire countryside. Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, and I ran through seven songs together. Of course, not having played together for 20 years, it took a couple of days to get rid of the rust.

“Then it was time for Ozzy to be part of us. I knew he wasn’t in good health, but I wasn’t ready to see how frail he was.

“He was helped into the rehearsal room by two helpers and a nurse and was using a cane – being Ozzy, the cane was black and studded with gold and precious stones.”

He continued: “[Ozzy] didn’t really say much beyond the usual greetings and when he sang, he sat in a chair. We ran through the songs but we could see it was exhausting him after six or seven songs.

“We had a bit of a chat, but he was actually quiet in contrast with the Ozzy of previous.”

News of Ozzy’s death was confirmed by his family in a statement last week, which read: “It is with more unhappiness than mere phrases can convey that now we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has handed away this morning. He was with his household and surrounded by love.

“We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.”

It was later reported that Ozzy died at his home in Buckinghamshire, and his household had flown in from Los Angeles to be with him.
