Clément Molin, a French analyst, posted a thread on the social media platform X analyzing Ukraine’s “deep fortification tactic” to keep Russia from annexing more land, as U.S.-backed peace talks continue.
Molin said, in French, he was analyzing “the issue of defensive lines in Ukraine” for the past three years. He believes that “despite a dire shortage of infantry to man them, Ukrainian obstacles are becoming more numerous and substantial, slowing down Russian progress”.
He posted a map with fortifications dug in 2025 in pink and the territory taken by the Russian military in the same 12 months in inexperienced.
“These fortifications are continuous, well-prepared, and numerous”, he wrote, initially in French.
Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly needed to freeze the conflict in Ukraine for the give up of the remainder of the Donetsk area, 70% of which is under Russian control, including the capital of the same title. Ukraine holds about 2,500 miles of territory in Donetsk.
A research by the Institute for the Study of War describes a “fortress belt” operating 31 miles through western Donetsk.
“Ukraine has spent the last 11 years pouring time, money, and effort into reinforcing the fortress belt and establishing significant defense industrial and defensive infrastructure,” it writes.
Reports from the area converse of trenches, bunkers, minefields, anti-tank obstacles, and barbed wire.
“The Russian soldiers must cross a series of obstacles in the open, sometimes finding themselves stuck in the middle”, Molin wrote.
“The Ukrainian army has understood that it can no longer fight head-on against the Russian army. It simply no longer has enough men. It therefore chooses to concentrate its defenses around strategic points.”
“These new fortifications are certainly impressive and useful, but they still need to be continuous. This is not the case in the Pokrovsk’e-Houlialpole axis, explaining the Russian push this year in the region.”
