Music legend George Harrison reportedly struggled to grasp Paul McCartney‘s “fruity” Abbey Road observe.

By 1969, the fissures that had emerged amongst The Beatles during the manufacturing of The White Album and Let It Be had widened into gaping chasms, pushing them to the sting of disbandment. Yet, they have been decided to produce one more chart-topping album — Abbey Road.

Harrison had already walked out on the band as soon as in January 1969, amidst the recording of Let It Be, as a result of escalating friction with McCartney. He was more and more pissed off together with his music being perpetually sidelined and ultimately developed a distaste for all of the tracks McCartney proposed.

In a 1977 interview with Crawdaddy, Harrison mirrored on his expertise in The Beatles, stating: “Sometimes Paul would make us do these really fruity songs. I mean, my god, Maxwell’s Silver Hammer was so fruity.

“After a whereas we did a good job on it, however when Paul acquired an concept or an association in his head… But Paul’s actually writing for a 14-year-old viewers now anyhow. I missed his final tour, sadly.”

Regardless of the quality of McCartney’s compositions, Harrison had grown weary of working on them at the expense of his own. This overarching tension for Harrison began during the recording of The White Album.

After wrapping up the record, Harrison collaborated with Jackie Lomax on an Apple album and celebrated Thanksgiving with Bob Dylan and The Band in Bearsville, New York. This experience led to a period of fruitful collaboration, leaving Harrison rejuvenated and eager to return to England to work on Let It Be with the Beatles.

However, reflecting on that time to Crawdaddy, Harrison shared: “I felt actually good at that time. I acquired back to England for Christmas after which on January 1st we have been to start out on the factor which was Let It Be. And immediately, again, it was simply bizarre vibes.”

The Beatles had enlisted Michael Lindsay-Hogg to helm a documentary intended to capture their recording sessions and rehearsals, which would eventually become the Let It Be film, originally planned as a companion to a live TV concert.

Yet, as disagreements over the concert’s location and the album’s direction intensified, Harrison realized that the sense of collaboration he had relished with Dylan and The Band was missing among his own bandmates.

His contributions, the songs he had penned in New York, were met with disinterest.

Harrison went on to explain: “The downside was that John and Paul had written songs for thus long it was difficult– First of all as a result of that they had such a lot of tunes they usually mechanically thought that theirs ought to be precedence.

“So for me, I’d always have to wait through ten of their songs before they’d even listen to one of mine. That was why All Things Must Pass had so many songs, because it was like I’d been constipated.

“I had a little encouragement from time to time, but it surely was little or no. It was like they have been doing me a favor. I didn’t have a lot confidence in writing songs as a result of of that. Because they by no means mentioned, ‘Yeah that is a good tune.’

“When we got into things like While My Guitar Gently Weeps, we recorded it one night and there was such a lack of enthusiasm. So I went home really disappointed because I knew the song was good.”

The dynamic within The Beatles grew more strained, ultimately resulting in an explosive confrontation between Harrison and McCartney. On Jan. 10, during a lunch break, Harrison reached his tipping level. “I think I’ll be leaving the band now,” he introduced.

John Lennon nonchalantly requested: “When?” prompting Harrison to reply: “Now. Get a replacement. Write into the NME and get a few people.”

As he made his exit, Harrison left a parting message for the group off-camera: “’round the clubs.”

Happily, Harrison’s exit turned out to be non permanent; he returned to The Beatles to conclude Let It Be and shortly after contributed to Abbey Road.

However, his frustrations with McCartney’s dominant habits continued.

In additional dialogue with Crawdaddy, Harrison elaborated: “Paul would always help along when you’d done his ten songs– then when he got ’round to doing one of my songs, he would help. It was silly. It was very selfish, actually.”
