Gossip Wire News fans rage over Labour MPs defence of Starmer: | UK News
Viewers who tuned into Thursday night’s Politics Hub on Gossip Wire News had been left outraged by feedback from Labour’s Emily Thornberry. The politician had been requested her ideas on Sir Keir Starmer and whether or not he ought to resign after he reportedly misled the Public and the House, by saying that disgraced Peter Mandelson had handed the Security Vetting when he hadn’t.
She was requested: “Do you suppose that this might sink the Prime Minister?” Thornberry replied: “No, I don’t think so because I do think that genuinely I think that when he was in front of parliament, he had a script in front of him and he was reading out what he had been told. Which anybody would think, as I did myself, that he had passed his vetting.” She added that the Prime Minister had “presumed” on the “basis of what he had been told”. She then continued to defend Starmer, saying: “I mean, whether the Prime Minister should be on top of everything, should he be superhuman and should he be able to cover everything or rely on others that give him advice? I mean, look, he is only a human being.”
One viewer reshared the clip as they might not consider what they had been listening to. Captioning it on X/Twitter, they raged: “WHAT?! Did I just hear this proper from Labour’s Emily Thornberry?
“She was requested ‘Do you suppose this might sink the Prime Minister?’ in regard to Starmer deceptive the Public and the House that Mandelson had handed the Security Vetting when he hadn’t.
“Her answer? ‘No because he was reading from a script’ and ‘He’s only a human being’ What the hell did I just listen to??”
Someone else commented: “Because apparently you’d need to be ‘superhuman’ to check if someone appointed to the highest diplomatic position in the UK had passed their security vetting. Ffs what is she waffling on about?? Stupid woman.”
One more said: “She just admitted what we are now releasing Starmer is just the face of Labour. He doesn’t know anything about anything that’s happening.”
However, somebody identified that earlier PMs have also relied on scripts, writing: “We’ve been told this many times that they have script writers. If you want change then vote for a totally different party than what we have had in this country before. A party that can’t be controlled by the deep state.”
The outrage follows calls for Starmer to stop after it emerged that Lord Mandelson was made US ambassador despite failing his security vetting.
Security officers initially denied Lord Mandelson clearance, but the PM had already announced his appointment, and the Foreign Office took the uncommon step of overruling the advice, according to The Guardian.
A Government spokesperson said Starmer was not conscious Lord Peter Mandelson failed his security vetting until earlier this week.
The spokesperson said: “The security vetting process for Peter Mandelson was sponsored by the FCDO. The decision to grant Developed Vetting to Peter Mandelson against the recommendation of UK Security Vetting was taken by officials in the FCDO.
“Neither the Prime Minister, nor any Government Minister, was aware that Peter Mandelson was granted Developed Vetting against the advice of UK Security Vetting until earlier this week.
“Once the Prime Minister was informed he immediately instructed officials to establish the facts about why the Developed Vetting was granted, in order to enact plans to update the House of Commons.
“The Government is committed to complying with the Humble Address in full as soon as possible. Any documentation within the scope of the Humble Address that requires redaction on the basis of national security or international relations will be provided to the ISC. This will include documents provided to the FCDO by UK Security Vetting.”
