Boots is on Netflix and the movie is a army drama following homosexual teen Cameron Cope (performed by Miles Heizer) as he joins the Marines corps with his best pal despite the dangers.
Set in the powerful world of the Nineteen Nineties US Marine Corps, when being homosexual in the army was still unlawful, the collection follows Cameron and Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), the son of a adorned Marine, as they be part of a numerous group of recruits.
Together, they forge unlikely friendships as they uncover their true selves as they’re pushed to their limits.
Netflix said: “With sharp wit and plenty of heart, Boots is about friendship, resilience, and finding your place in the world — even when that world seems determined to keep you in line or leave you behind.”
Greg Cope White is a former sergeant in the US Marine Corps and he served as a author and govt producer on the collection.
He is passionate about LGBTQ+ and veteran rights, and is featured in the PBS docuseries American Veteran and revealed in the army journal Zero Dark Thirty.
Reflecting on how far he has come since his time in the Marine Corps, he shared on Instagram: “At 18, I illegally enlisted in the Marine Corps to find my place as a gay man in the masculine world.
“The guide honors my lifelong best pal Dale, who received me through a chaotic childhood, and the Marines who took a likelihood on me and modified my life.
“And to send a message to others who are bullied: Bullies don’t matter. You do. Hold on.”
Greg served six years in the Marines and earned the rank of Sergeant, before transferring to New York City to examine appearing and writing.
He ended up in Los Angeles, where he received his writing break via a job with Norman Lear.
The Pink Marine web site explains how enlisting into the Marines was Greg’s first battle, as he “has to cheat to pass the physical and then lie on the enlistment papers about his inappropriateity”.
The characters Cameron and Dale are based on Greg and his best pal Dale, with the web site explaining the dangers they both took.
It says: “It’s insanely dangerous for both of them. But as fate would have it, the Few and the Proud turn out to be a bunch of oddballs and eccentrics – and a brotherhood is born.”
