Singer Guy Hovis has died aged 84. The tragic news was confirmed by his daughter Julie.
She told GWN that her father had died peacefully on Thursday at a hospital in Oxford, Mississippi. He had been admitted to the medical facility after struggling with an undisclosed and lingering sickness for the past few weeks. Hovis’ ex-wife and singing accomplice, Ralna English, confirmed the news in a post on Facebook. She shared that he devastatingly “took a turn for the worse” following a stint in hospital. She emotionally penned: “As it has for me, this will come as a shock to many of you. Guy has been in the hospital for several weeks. I spoke briefly with him on Monday and was deeply concerned.
“He took a flip for the more severe and it hurts me to inform you, but he died peacefully last evening. Needless to say, at this time we’re all devastated and merely making an attempt to cope with this tragic news. Thank you for your prayers for Julie and Sis and Guys complete household.”
Hovis and English shared a daughter together and still remained on good terms, despite no longer being together.
He previously told press: “We’ve loved a fairly good relationship for virtually 50 years now. It is partly the mix of our voices and also that we’ve always harmonized very simply together.
“We’ve also kept a good personal friendship over the years, because of our daughter.”
The former couple used to carry out together after Hovis joined The Lawrence Welk Show in 1969. He soon grew to become a common thanks to English, who was already performing on the show prior to her husband.
They carried out both as a duet and also as soloists.
One of Hovis’ profession highlights was when he sang for President George W. Bush in 2005 with a rendition of Let the Eagle Soar. It was the President’s second inauguration.
