Reolink, a home safety and security company, has determined the most dangerous cities in the commonwealth through crime data available from the FBI.

The results include several cities in the Louisville area, with Lyndon, St. Matthews, Louisville, Shively and Middletown making the cut as most dangerous. Lyndon topped the list, with high crime rates per 1,000 residents.

One Kentucky city tops the list, but city leaders dispute findings

Lyndon, located just outside Louisville in Jefferson County, is considered the most dangerous city in the commonwealth.

Reolink says that the home-class city has almost 8,000 residents with a criminal rate of 56.80 per 1,000 residents.

Lyndon leaders, including Chief of Police Robert Schroeder and Mayor Brent Hagan, dispute the recent findings from Reolink, saying that crime rates are significantly lower than the rates listed by the company. The FBI’s 2024 uniform crime reporting data shows a population of just below 11,000, with a total violent crime rate of 1.0 per 1,000 population and a property crime rate of 25.28 per 1,000.

“The combined rate is 26.29 per 1,000, which is significantly lower than the 56.80 per 1,000 rate listed in the Reolink article,” Schroeder said.

Erlanger is considered the safest town in Kentucky, according to the study, with a population of more than 19,000 and low total crimes of 555.
