The debate surrounding transgender athletes in girls’s sports activities has never fully disappeared, but it has discovered its method back into the middle of the sports activities dialog this summer time. From the WNBA to skilled tennis, athletes and coaches are being requested where they stand on the steadiness between inclusion and sustaining aggressive protections in girls’s sports activities. Coco Gauff turned one of the latest stars to weigh in this week, offering a significantly more nuanced response than some of the voices that have dominated the dialog.
But a lot of the latest dialog could be traced to Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. In a July ESPN profile, Cunningham said she wished to “protect young girls” in locker rooms and competitors and argued that they shouldn’t have to compete against what she called “biological men.” When requested about the feedback again days later, Cunningham didn’t back away, calling her place “common sense” while insisting that disagreement with transgender participation in girls’s sports activities doesn’t imply she hates transgender people. The feedback turned big enough that demonstrations supporting and opposing Cunningham started showing outdoors Fever video games.
