Traveling through airport security at any level of the day is never enjoyable or straightforward, and now, as the federal government stays partially shut down, many vacationers are dealing with over three-hour wait occasions and the dread of lacking their flights.

Being the chronically anxious individual that I am, and realizing I had a flight to Dallas, Texas, to cowl the 2026 Conservative Political Action Conference, one may say this was my worst nightmare. However, in a weird twist that I admit I didn’t see coming, the road in LaGuardia Airport in New York was not as dangerous as I had feared it could be.

The total expertise, which lasted only half an hour, started as my Lyft rolled to a stop exterior of the airport’s Terminal B. The sight of LaGuardia Airport (where I had by the way been not 48 hours in the past) crammed me with a sense of foreboding.

Across social media, videos displaying traces snaking around the airport and even exterior prompted a number of of my mates, and even my dad and mom, to warning me to get there with enough time. In fact, my mom, who is aware of my love of being locations early, joked around 11 a.m. that she needed to know how the airport was since my flight to the Lone Star State was not until mid-afternoon.

However, the expertise couldn’t have been more different from the social media scenes. Upon coming into the terminal, I was shocked to discover that the traces for TSA Pre-Check and even normal boarding appeared to be shifting easily. As somebody who travels often, the road appeared to me like one thing one may anticipate when making an attempt to fly home for Christmas or any other big vacation. Two people have been also overheard laughing after a TSA official told us that we have been supposed to get our boarding paperwork and IDs out before approaching the desk, in any other case, “You will be skipped.” One of the passengers joked that it meant that the unlucky souls would have to go to the end of the road.

Not wishing to be late for my flight nor keen to press the buttons of a burdened TSA agent, I opted not to ask what they meant by “skipping a person.”

While it was reported that President Donald Trump had deployed ICE brokers to help overworked brokers, I did not see any prowling the terminal.

Finally, after only half an hour in line, I was cleared through the screening course of and free to catch my flight to Texas. In fact, the only crowds that proved troublesome to navigate have been the gate lice — a time period given to those people who crowd around the jet bridge before their group is called.

I really feel like I ought to also be aware that this is the second time in a week that I had no problem navigating security. Despite my luck, I assume it will be remiss not to acknowledge the stress of those who do have points with TSA and are compelled to wait.
