Suzie Fletcher is among the gifted group of The Repair Shop specialists but what do we all know about her life away from the programme? It seems Suzie isn’t the only well-known face in her household. Her brother Steve also seems on The Repair Shop, and according to Suzie, he impressed her to signal up for the programme.
She told the BBC: “Every time [Steve] called, he looked to be having such a good time. I jokingly said, ‘If they need anyone to do leather I’m your gal. I really was joking but after several phone calls and a lot of reassurance from Steve I agreed to give it a go and joined the team.
“I’m so happy I did as this is one of the most enjoyable things I’ve ever been involved with [and] it’s also helped me through some very dark days.” Previously gushing about her brother, Suzie also told The Times that Steve has been her “my rock all my life”. She explained: “Every step. I really didn’t think I was confident enough to be on The Repair Shop, but I had the saving grace of Steve being there.”
Suzie was first married in her 20s but went on to marry her second husband Rob in her early 30s, after transferring to America for work. Suzie said she was “swept off her toes” by Rob where within three months of arriving in Denver they wed.
Over the years though, Suzie has bravely opened up about the abuse she suffered from Rob. Recalling one time he had lifted her off the ground by her throat, Suzie told MailOnline: “I truthfully thought I used to be going to die. He was choking me and may simply have killed me. I do not know why but finally he let go.”
Suzie also beforehand said that Rob once told her a “cruel” lie that her beloved brother Steve was dying. said: “He tried (to turn me against my family). He did try and that was not going to happen. He also was very cruel. On one visit we came back to the UK and I’m incredibly close to my brother Steve.
“And he and Steve had been spending a lot of time together. We’d acquired back to the US and he said: ‘I’m going to let you know now, your brother is critically in poor health, most likely terminal. He’s told me this in confidence so you’ll be able to’t inform anyone.”
Suzie and Rob had been married for 15 years before his death in 2013 of pancreatic cancer, a tragedy that struck the household unexpectedly as his sickness was unknown to them.
In her 2013 memoir, The Sun Over The Mountains : A Story of Hope, Healing and Restoration, Suzie opened up about Rob’s remaining moments. She wrote: “On Monday morning, Rob became quite lucid and started talking. ‘Baby blue,’ he repeated a few times, ‘Brum, brum, brum, drive.’
“The words were clear, but the meaning was not. And while he was speaking, his arms were going up and then down.” Suzie continued, describing how Rob’s lungs started filling with fluid later that afternoon, prompting a determined attempt to drain them. She said that as his life slipped away, Rob locked eyes with her, and in a fleeting prompt, he was gone.
