The Bachelorette star Taylor Frankie Paul is at the moment dealing with controversy, leaving followers questioning about where issues stand with her ex-boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen, after an alleged home assault investigation into Paul.

Paul, 31, was set to seem in the latest season of The Bachelorette, premiering Sunday, March 22. However, just days before the premiere, on March 16, a spokesperson for the Draper City Police Department confirmed there’s an open “domestic assault investigation” involving both the Hulu star and her ex Mortensen, 33.

“Allegations have been made in both directions,” the spokesperson said, including that “contact was made with involved parties” on February 24 and 25. This comes just after Mortensen spoke out about the investigation. The Bachelorette has also since been canceled, and will no longer air on Sunday.

Amid the state of affairs, Paul shared that she and Mortensen are at the moment not in direct contact. According to Entertainment Weekly, she said on March 17 that they’ve “no contact right now,” explaining the choice got here when she “took action about a few weeks ago.” Instead, the previous couple is relying on a “third-party” to handle “pick-up, drop-offs, communication” while the investigation continues.

The pair share a 1-year-old son, Ever. Paul is also mom to daughter Indy, 8, and son Ocean, 5, whom she shares with ex-husband Tate Paul.

Speaking at a press event forward of the premiere, Paul said the current association is critical. “I think that’s the best case, honestly, because clearly it’s just not to a point of us getting along, so I wanted to take the best action I could,” she said. She added that, for “the sake” of her son, she plans not to “bring anything to the public eye” and “not make it a big deal.”

Paul has beforehand spoken brazenly about her relationship with Mortensen, which is featured prominently in The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. At the March 17 event, she told Extra that the previous couple “absolutely” had “an addictive cycle,” but clarified that this is no longer the case.

Despite the headlines, Paul continued to promote The Bachelorette. She has said that becoming a member of the show was an “immediate” yes, explaining that she needed to go away the “toxicity of a life in Utah and bubble.”

“It was like the best thing I could have done,” she said. “I think it was like the best thing and something I’ve never done before, so I have no regrets.”

Still, the timing of the investigation has weighed on her. Reflecting on the news coverage, Paul said it her “heart hurts to see” the headlines. “Just the timing is hard, and it’s a big deal. I feel like every premiere that I’ve experienced, I’ve never enjoyed fully, so this is another one,” she said.

“It’s extremely hard,” Paul continued. “It took everything to get me here today. It’s a heavy time, and it’s unfortunate.”

She added, “I’m struggling for sure, but also at the same time, I feel like if I don’t show up, then I’m just giving these opportunities away and not enjoying what we’ve worked on and something super exciting that’s coming. I just feel like it was the right thing to do…show up even though it’s hard.”

The latest allegations comply with a prior incident between Paul and Mortensen three years in the past. In 2023, Paul was arrested on suspicion of home violence following an argument in which she was accused of throwing a chair that allegedly hit her daughter.

She was charged with misdemeanor assault, legal mischief, and committing home violence in the presence of a baby, according to CBS News. The prices had been later dismissed, apart from aggravated assault, which she pleaded guilty to in abeyance. The charge will probably be dismissed if she complies with the circumstances of the plea.
