Hours after the U.S. announced “multiple strikes” against Iran, the Islamic Republic retaliated, hanging 18 American targets across the Middle East.
Sirens may very well be heard in Bahrain on early Thursday morning local time, mere minutes after Iran‘s Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed ot have launched recent attacks on U.S. bases in the realm.
“The siren has been sounded. Citizens and residents are urged to remain calm and head to the nearest safe place,” Bahrain’s Interior Ministry wrote on its official X account.
The IRGC subsequently claimed to have launched attacks on 18 “significant targets,” including an airbase in Bahrain and two in Kuwait, Iran’s official, state-run IRNA News Agency reported.
It’s not clear whether or not any air raid sirens sounded in Kuwait in latest hours amid the reported strikes. It’s also unclear whether or not there have been any casualties.
Thursday morning’s strikes come after U.S. Central Command announced that the U.S. began launching strikes against Iran.
Moments later, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth snapped at a reporter after being requested about whether or not the U.S. may very well be committing “war crimes” against the Middle Eastern nation.
“U.S. Central Command forces began launching additional self-defense strikes today at 5:15 p.m. ET against multiple targets in Iran at the Commander in Chief’s direction,” CENTCOM wrote on its official X web page. “The strikes are in response to Iran’s unwarranted and continued aggression.”
Moments later, a reporter grilled Hegseth about the strikes in a press spray the protection secretary entertained at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.
“Sir, you just mentioned you’re going to plan to hit them and strike them hard tonight,” the reporter said. “If the response is in hitting bridges and electrical infrastructure, how would that not be a war crime, potentially targeting civilian infrastructure?”
Hegseth’s response was scathing: “Well, that’s precisely the kind of disingenuous question that I’m used to from the media — impugning the motives of the folks on our side, who are incredibly professional and incredibly effective.”
“We will hit them hard, on our terms, on the targets that improve the environment for us to operate in and undermine the capabilities that Iran wants to have,” he added.
Hegseth went on to say that the U.S. is “clearly signaling” to Iran with the strikes and that Iran has a “choice” in the best way it responds, imploring the nation to work with the “incredible negotiating team” President Donald Trump dispatched to the Middle East to work out the phrases of a ceasefire.
“They choose not to, and, as a result, they’re going to meet the United States Central Command again tonight, in the way the president laid out clearly,” he said.
Iranian official media said on Thursday morning local time that “enemy” projectiles hit places close to Minab and Sirik, both jurisdictions in southern Iran close to the Strait of Hormuz — which Trump insisted on Wednesday night (East Coast time) that the U.S. controls.
“Last month, I directed our Great U.S. Military to execute a secret mission to support Oil Tankers and other Commercial Ships through the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Today, I am pleased to announce that this effort has resulted in more than 100 MILLION Barrels of Oil making its way through the Strait, and into the Open Market,” he continued. “More than 200 Commercial Ships have safely traveled through the Strait.”
“This wildly successful effort is because the UNITED STATES of AMERICA CONTROLS the Strait of Hormuz — NOT Iran,” he emphasised. “Their military is defeated, and their economy is lost. It’s over for Iran! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
The official Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) also reported that air protection systems in Asaluyeh on the Persian Gulf have been activated, but IRIB added that no enemy assault has so far occurred on the key power hub — which, according to GWN, hosts refineries and petrochemical complexes.
