Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was questioned why he had access to the internet when the Iranian people didn’t.
“I just want to point out you’re speaking to us via Zoom. The Iranian people don’t have open Internet access, but you do. Why?” questioned Margaret Brennan, the host of “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.”
Araghchi defended the internet blockade in Iran, which has entered its third week, by reasoning that it’s an “urgent measure,” for “security reasons” as Iran is “under aggression.”
“I’m the voice of Iranians, and I have to defend their right. So this is why I have access to the internet to just, you know, have- have our voice being heard by the international community,” Araghchi said.
Iran’s latest internet blackout has lasted more than 14 days, connectivity monitor Netblocks said on Friday.
“Two full weeks have now passed since #Iran fell into digital darkness amid a regime-imposed internet blackout. The public remains isolated from the outside world with only a limited domestic intranet after 336 hours, while state-approved accounts get whitelisted access,” Netblocks posted on X.
It’s one of the most extreme “government-imposed nationwide internet shutdowns on record globally,” according to the watchdog group that screens cybersecurity and the governance of the Internet.
The group also famous that this disruption is “the second-longest registered in Iran after the January protests,” with Iran successfully spending a third of 2026 offline.
Access Now, an NGO working to defend digital rights, urgently called on “Iranian authorities to immediately restore full internet access and refrain from imposing further disruptions.”
“Internet connectivity sharply dropped by more than 98% directly after the U.S. and Israel launched their unlawful military attacks on Iran. As the war enters its 12th day, millions of people in Iran have been cut off from the global internet at a moment when access to communications and reliable information is most critical,” the assertion read.
Tensions escalated after U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, which have so far killed more than 1440 people in Iran, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. More than 18,000 are reported injured in Iran.
