James Corden reveals his worst Gavin & Stacey episode | | UK News

James Corden opened up about the Gavin & Stacey episode he likes least.

The star, who co-wrote the beloved BBC sequence alongside Ruth Jones, confessed that the second instalment of the first sequence was a “very, very, very bad half hour.”

The episode in query centred on a important telephone call misunderstanding between the 2 lead characters, which in the end led to Gavin making the journey to Wales to salvage their romance.

Speaking at the BBC Comedy Festival, he revealed that he and co-creator Ruth Jones “backed ourselves into a corner” by having Gavin suggest to Stacey at the close of Episode 1.

At that level in their careers, Corden and Jones had yet to recognise that Gavin & Stacey was “not a sitcom but closer to a comedy drama,” he explained, stories Gloucestershire Live.

The actor went on to say: “We were conscious of this half-hour comedy thing and I don’t think we trusted that actually the characters will be the thing that will be funny.

“We tried to instead say we needed one thing humorous in the scenes so we had Gavin soar the obstacles when proposing, and be coated in lasers. In our head we had been making a sitcom but we weren’t, we had been making a character-driven story.”

James, who shot to prominence playing Neil ‘Smithy’ Smith, noted that one silver lining from the episode was the debut of squabbling couple Dawn and Pete Sutcliffe, portrayed by Julia Davis and Adrian Scarborough.

The series ran for three series alongside a further three Christmas specials between 2007 and 2024. The concluding episode, which aired on Christmas Day 2024, depicted Smithy marrying Nessa and garnered overnight ratings of 12.3 million.

James acknowledged that its remarkable success was attributable to several factors, including luck and timing. He said: “Shows will be sensible and not essentially discover that viewers, significantly comedy. Success is about timing, it is about temper, tradition. There is such an factor of luck in it.”

He additional remarked: “If (Gavin and Stacey) got here six months earlier or later there’s a probability it does not work. We are so programmed to assume about success but success is about timing, temper, tradition, and there’s such an factor of luck in it.”

James and Ruth have since departed the BBC in favour of Apple TV for The Choir, which begins filming this year and features the pair portraying siblings Ben and Lisa, reunited when Ben returns from abroad to a sleepy English town.
