Maher pressed on, stating, “I’m not asking you to apologize for it, I don’t want you to do that. I’m just saying, you’d go a long way toward getting people who have just completely shut the door to you and the administration if you would just own that. You guys went too far, you went too far, and you should own it like you did childless cat ladies.”

The studio viewers erupted in applause as Vance responded with an uneasy snicker before mounting his protection. “Here’s the basic problem with that, Bill, is you cannot do any deportations without law enforcement and you can’t do a law enforcement operation like that without some situations that don’t look good when they’re recorded like that,” the Vice President argued.

He additional acknowledged, “I appreciate your argument that we’ve gone too far, but we couldn’t do nothing. And I don’t think there was an easy way to do that.”

Maher cut in, countering, “No, of course, I just, there’s a middle ground. The other thing that bothers us about stuff like that is that nothing ever lands in the middle, which is what I’m always trying to get people to do.”

Vance fired back, labeling the host a “crazy liberal,”prompting Maher to quip, “You don’t watch the show. You should watch the show,” before including a playful jab, “I know someone in your administration watches the show.”
