Paul McCartney and John Lennon did not at all times take pleasure in every monitor they penned for The Beatles. John significantly wasn’t shy about criticizing his bandmate’s compositions post-breakup.

John was particularly essential of Paul’s contributions to the ‘Abbey Road’ finale medley, the ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album from 1967, and the hit single ‘Let it Be. ‘ Reflecting on ‘Let it Be’ during a 1980 interview, John remarked: “That’s Paul. What can you say? Nothing to do with The Beatles. It could’ve been Wings. I don’t know what he’s thinking when he writes ‘Let It Be’.”

John didn’t spare his own songs either, expressing remorse over penning the monitor ‘It’s Only Love’, which he slammed by saying: “That’s the one song I really hate of mine. Terrible lyrics.”

Paul has equally picked aside some of his songs, like ‘Little Child’ from ‘With The Beatles’, the group’s second album.

‘Little Child’, with its plea for somebody to dance and take a risk, was impressed by ‘Whistle My Love’ by Elton Hayes, particularly the “I’m so sad and lonely” line, according to Paul, experiences the Liverpool Echo.

Paul acknowledged that ‘Little Child’ was merely filler materials for the album. He later candidly assessed the piece saying: “‘Little Child’ was a work job.

“Different songs got here out of inspiration and just flowed. Others had been labor, like shortly writing a track for Ringo for the album,” observed Paul.

But there was one Beatles tune that John Lennon and Paul McCartney mutually disliked. ‘Hold Me Tight,’ mainly penned by Paul in 1961, bore the hallmark Lennon-McCartney byline, as was customary for their collaborative works for The Beatles.

Finding its place on early live performance lists, ‘Hold Me Tight’ was first tackled during the grueling 12-hour recording session for their debut, ‘Please Please Me,’ on February 11, 1963. Despite 13 attempts, the track was scrapped from the lineup.

Similarly to ‘Little Child,’ the song eventually landed on their sophomore album, ‘With The Beatles,’ after an additional nine takes on September 11 and 12, 1963. It wasn’t among the smoothest recordings they’d produced.

Neither of the songwriting duo had any fondness for it. McCartney reflected with indifference: “I can not bear in mind a lot about that one. Certain songs had been just ‘work’ songs, you have not obtained a lot reminiscence of them. That’s one of them.”

Paul even labeled the track as “a failed attempt at a single which then turned an acceptable album filler” In a 1980 dialogue, John Lennon also distanced himself, saying: “That was Paul’s… It was a fairly poor track and I was never actually interested in it.”

The critical reception echoed these sentiments. Music commentators Roy Carr and Tony Tyler critiqued in ‘The Beatles: An Illustrated Record’ that the tune “fails because McCartney’s imaginative and prescient of the entire tune clearly sagged considerably”.

Rolling Stone magazine referred to the song as “horrifying”, while Ian McDonald held a more favorable view, stating: “Play it loud with the bass boosted, and you will have an overwhelming motoric rocker strongly redolent of the band’s reside sound.”
