Lakers likely to select a big man or wing in first | College News
The Lakers will search to use their twenty fifth choose in Tuesday’s first spherical of the NBA draft on a participant who fills a need on a roster that might have up to 9 free brokers this summer season. Yet the Lakers also are conscious that selecting that late in the spherical might depart them choosing the best participant accessible.
They most likely can be in search of a middle who could be a lob menace or an athletic wing who can play protection and knock down three-pointers, two positions the Lakers crave as they fight to construct a staff around star Luka Doncic that matches best with his type of play.
Names that NBA executives and mock drafts hooked up to the Lakers are Kentucky middle Jayden Quaintance, Texas ahead Dailyn Swain and Duke wing Isaiah Evans.
The Lakers spent time in Spain trying at 20-year-old guard Sergio de Larrea, but many NBA scouts see him going later in the first spherical or even in the second. According to people not approved to converse publicly, the Lakers have been impressed by their workout with Purdue level guard Braden Smith. But he’s on the smaller aspect (6 ft) and performed 4 years in school, main scouts to consider his upside shouldn’t be that high and that he’ll be drafted in the second spherical.
The Lakers don’t have a choose in Wednesday’s second spherical.
After the Lakers have been swept by a deep and athletic Oklahoma City staff in the second spherical of the playoffs, president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka outlined what it takes when making an attempt to compete in the uber-tough Western Conference against the likes of the Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs, who turned the second-youngest staff to attain the NBA Finals.
Pelinka regarded at how Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell was drafted in the second spherical and how he flourished in just his second season, particularly in the playoffs, in which he averaged 15.1 factors and 4.3 assists in 11 video games.
“Depth is really important, athleticism and youth. We have a lot of components of that on our roster, but we need to add to it,” Pelinka said last month during his exit interview with the media. “I think those are some of the key North Stars that we need to look at.
“One of the players that they had who played really well, Ajay Mitchell, they got in the second round. So there’s ways to add to your roster if you commit to doing the hard work and commit to the process of adding the right pieces. … We’ll be doing that through the draft and free agency and through trades. We’ve gotta find a way to have a roster that will compete with any team in the NBA. That’s what we do here.”
The Lakers do have three tradable first-round picks — 2026, 2031 and 2033 — but the latter two can’t be moved until after the draft.
Lakers star LeBron James is an unrestricted free agent and is trying for a deal from the Lakers, while Austin Reaves is predicted to choose out of his $14.8-million deal so he can signal a contract with them for up to 5 years and about $241 million.
Still, the Lakers have to proceed with the draft to discover a participant.

Swain (6-7) and Evans (6-6) are the sort of athletic wings the Lakers might use, but both is perhaps chosen before the Lakers make their choose.
The 6-9 Quaintance might slide to the Lakers because of health issues. He performed in only 4 video games last season at Kentucky because the staff was being cautious following knee surgical procedure after he tore an anterior cruciate ligament when he performed at Arizona State.
Scouts still view him as cellular, athletic and younger enough — he turns 19 next month — to develop. But, Quaintance will need to rehab his knee and most likely received’t be prepared for the upcoming season. When healthy, scouts said, he could be the lob menace and defender that Doncic yearns to have.
