Stephen Colbert is preparing to say goodbye to CBS, with a TV knowledgeable warning he won’t be the only late-night host to get axed.
The 62-year-old will be bidding a closing farewell to viewers on Thursday, May 21, with CBS canceling The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last 12 months after more than 10 years on air. The finale will function a quantity of particular visitors, including Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers.
Robert Thompson, a Syracuse University professor of tv and well-liked tradition, urged Colbert’s show was the glue that held the others together. Without it, he believes they’re at risk.
“Like all broadcast television, it was cultural glue. We all fed from the same cultural trough at the same time,” he told The Washington Post.
Thompson added, “That is gone and only remains in a few pockets, and those pockets are falling one by one. When Colbert leaves, another one of those important pockets will have fallen.”
CBS announced the end of Colbert’s show back in July 2025. They said this system was being axed due to financial causes and “is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters.”
The late-night host also announced the cancellation as he told viewers, “It’s not just the end of the show. It is the end of the Late Show on CBS. I’m not being replaced – this is all just going away.”
Colbert added, “I do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners. And of course, I’m grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night in here, out there, all around the world.”
The cancellation got here shortly after Paramount reached a reported $16 million legal settlement with Donald Trump. The president had beforehand criticized Colbert, calling for him to be fired from CBS.
Fans aren’t joyful at the thought of dropping Colbert and have shared their anger on social media in the run up to his closing show. “I’m devastated. I will never forgive CBS,” one individual vowed on Instagram.
Another said, “This world is too scary without you! We need you! Now more than ever!” while a third added, “Stephen. You are a national treasure. Thank you for all the joy and humanity you deliver on the daily. We are going to miss you so much.”
Once Colbert’s show ends, Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed will start airing on CBS in the 11.35 p.m. slot.
