Leavitt accuses Newsom of ‘kneecapping’ law | Political News
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has claimed police in Los Angeles have been “kneecapped” by Gavin Newsom’s insurance policies as anti-ICE protests in the town proceed.
Speaking at the White House on Wednesday, Leavitt prompt that police weren’t being allowed to do their jobs.
“The president called the governor on Friday evening and told him to let law enforcement in California do their jobs,” she mentioned.
“[LAPD] are trying to do the work that they’ve so bravely signed up to do to enforce the law but they have been kneecapped by incompetent Democrat policies and Democrat politicians who do not allow their local law enforcement to correspond and coordinate with federal immigration authorities.”
She went on to accuse the state’s leaders of being unwilling to collaborate with federal immigration authorities, seemingly alluding to claims made by Trump officers that California Gov. Gavin Newsom has blocked ICE brokers from conducting their operations.
“The Democrat governor and the Democrat Mayor of Los Angeles have failed their citizens,” Leavitt said.
“Thankfully, the president took action and stepped in to protect our federal law enforcement agents, to protect federal buildings, to protect the federal mission of deporting illegal criminals off our streets — and that mission will continue every day as far as we are concerned.”
Newsom has been at odds with the Trump administration amid the continuing anti-deportation demonstrations.
Trump enraged the governor after he deployed 4,000 National Guards and 700 Marines to the town. Trump has accused the protestors of being “paid agitators,” “insurrectionists” and “animals.”
Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass have been extremely important of the Trump administration, accusing them of overstepping in state issues and stoking tensions.
Democrats and witnesses have described the scenario on the ground as largely peaceable until federal law enforcement’s arrival.
The White House also made an effort to spotlight the roughly two dozen reviews of property harm and looting from native companies in downtown Los Angeles.
Leavitt’s remarks echo related sentiments expressed by the president amid the continuing demonstrations.
President Trump not too long ago made backhanded remarks suggesting that Newsom is being opportunistic, including that he thinks Newsom is a “nice guy” but is a unhealthy governor.
Republicans have been broadly important of California officers’ handling of the protests, with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) suggesting that Newsom deserves to be “tar and feathered,” which means publicly tortured.
