Scott O’Neil, the CEO of LIV Golf, is ardently advocating for his group’s inclusion in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), a transfer that would considerably benefit his gamers and the Saudi-backed tour.

LIV Golf has twice submitted functions to be a part of the OWGR, even altering their format from the 54-hole, no-cut, closed-field model. Being half of the OWGR would offer their gamers with elevated alternatives to take part in major tournaments, bringing LIV Golf nearer to the stature of the PGA and DP World Tours.

When LIV Golf was established in 2022, then-CEO Greg Norman utilized for accreditation to the OWGR but was turned down. Scott O’Neil, who took over as CEO in 2025, reapplied in July of the same yr and is optimistic about the end result.

“We are working very closely with [chairman] Trevor Immelman and the board of OWGR,” O’Neil shared with BBC Sport NI. “It’s likely that it will have an impact at some point.

We are having conversations with Trevor, who is doing an extraordinary and difficult job towards a solution that we hope to have in place by next season. There are a whole host of things we are talking through.”

In July, Immelman confirmed that the OWGR Board is meticulously reviewing LIV Golf’s utility.

“The OWGR Board is committed to a thorough evaluation process of all applications, and LIV’s application will be reviewed in accordance with OWGR’s criteria to ensure fairness, integrity and consistency,” said Immelman, a former Masters champion and current broadcaster.

“We appreciate the interest of LIV Golf-and all tours-in contributing to the global landscape of men’s professional golf through OWGR. Further updates will be provided as the review progresses.”

The initial rejection of LIV’s utility stemmed from former OWGR chairman Peter Dawson, who raised considerations about the tour’s construction and competitors model.

“LIV players are self-evidently good enough to be ranked,” Dawson said at the time of rejection. “They’re just not playing in a format where they can be ranked equitably with the other 24 tours and thousands of players trying to compete on them.”

Currently, LIV Golf’s roster of stars, including Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm, can accumulate OWGR factors solely through major championships or worldwide tour competitions. Access to rating factors stays vital for securing invites to major tournaments and would lend LIV a more standard image, according to O’Neil.
