LIV Golf star sums up player frustrations after | Golf News
LIV Golf star Thomas Detry acknowledged the communication within the league has fallen short of expectations as the Saudi-backed circuit confronts a potential closure.
“I’m not gonna lie, I think it’s been pretty poor because nobody really knows,” Detry told Garrett Johnston on Beyond the Clubhouse when questioned about the dialogue between executives and gamers concerning the shutdown.
“I do think that some of the stuff is out of control, even out of the control of the LIV leadership. It comes from way above that. It hasn’t been easy for them to deal with everything and it hasn’t been easy for us as well.”
Detry continued: “I’m fully supportive of the whole thing. I think the players stand behind the whole thing as well. But now is the time for this whole league and every player out here to show cohesion and support for this whole thing.
“I feel now is a second where it isn’t the fitting time to have individualistic people and ego-centric people going their own manner.
“I think if everyone stands for each other and we all give this thing our full support, it’s going to go a long way.” Detry is not the only player left pondering his future, as 53-year-old Richard Bland admitted he has severe doubts about whether or not the PGA Tour Champions would welcome him back ought to LIV Golf fold.
“From what I’ve been told, I’m not hugely welcome there,” said Bland. “As far as I’m aware, I was never given the exemption – well, I wasn’t given the exemption. I’m the only senior major champion never to get that exemption, and that’s fine, I don’t have an issue with that. I think the Champions Tour have made it pretty now impossible for anybody to come and play.
“I’m not going to go chasing it. I’ll be 54 years previous, but I’m going to be banned for a 12 months anyway. Like you say, I obtained requested the query the other day, ‘Would you take into account going back to DP World Q-School?’ No.
“I hope that whatever we become in the future, that I can stay with the Cleeks in some form, even if it’s taking the TrackMans back to the clubhouse or something like that. I would love to stay on board with the Cleeks in some way. That’s down to Jonas and Johan, whether they want me or they don’t.”
