A former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State said “Russia is no longer winning” as it turns into “clearer that Ukraine in fact has a lot of cards.”
Daniel Fried, a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs and U.S. Ambassador to Poland, made the remarks as Ukraine continues its bombardment of Russian oil and gasoline refineries to weaken the Kremlin’s warfare machine.
Despite U.S. President Donald Trump‘s evaluation that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “didn’t have any cards,” Fried said that warfare efforts in Ukraine have shifted to a place of strength amid its deep territorial strikes in Russia, which he said is forcing Washington and Europe to rethink outdated assumptions about Kyiv’s standing in the years-long warfare.
“Russia is no longer winning, it is beginning to lose,” he told The Kyiv Post. “It’s now becoming clearer that Ukraine in fact has a lot of cards. Trump loves winners. Ukraine is winning. Putin is beginning to look like a loser.”
Shortly after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Biden administration’s intelligence community widely agreed that Kyiv was bound to “combat very bravely and lose in a short time.” However, Fried argued that “they had been mistaken.”

He pointed to Russia’s failure to wipe out Ukraine with its initial assault and inability to seize its capital or wipe out its leadership.
Now, reflecting on the over four-year-long war, experts, including Fried, believe Ukraine is proving its ability to withstand Russian aggression as the Kremlin fails to achieve its war goals.
“That view, once a marginal view, is now becoming the predominant view,” Fried said about Ukraine staving off Russia.
He made clear that he does not believe the war is over and that Ukrainian forces will push Russian forces out of its territory. However, he said the Trump administration is being forced to reevaluate its stances.
Fried revealed that people around Trump who tried to push aside the Ukraine war are receiving backlash, while officials who have argued the geopolitical importance of the situation are gaining credibility.
He pointed to the statement released by G7 leaders following its annual summit earlier in the week, where they affirmed their support for Ukraine’s air defense, long-range capabilities and potential weapons production.
While the assertion was “not definitive in all ways” after only promising to “consider” providing assistance for domestic weapons production that it “was a pretty good joint statement,” adding that “the fact that the U.S. signed onto it is a very good sign.”
He went on to highlight the importance of U.S. support for Ukraine for its wider geopolitical impact.
“Aid to Ukraine and Ukraine’s success is in the American curiosity. Full stop,” Fried said. “Ukraine’s success helps the U.S. both in Europe and around the world. Full stop.”
He added, “Politics and overseas coverage should not for the purists.”
